Wafa Sultan's message to America

dr. wafa sultan
Dr. Wafa Sultan

Dr. Wafa Sultan is a Syrian-born American psychiatrist famous for her blistering critique of Islam in a debate with a Muslim cleric first aired on al-Jazeera television in 2006. The video of this controversial chastisement was posted online and has been seen by millions of people worldwide. So popular was this courageous and passionate exposé that TIME magazine voted Dr. Sultan one of the world's 100 most influential people of that year.

Dr. Sultan is also a co-founder of the American human rights group Former Muslims United, whose members include other important ex-Muslim activists such Nonie Darwish and Amil Imani, along with other brave souls. One of the main purposes of FMU is to ensure that Muslim apostates are protected under U.S. law, which charges people with murder who kill other human beings, regardless of their faith or non-belief. Unfortunately, according to the four main schools of Islamic jurisprudence, apostates from Islam can be murdered freely and legallyand many of the Muslim faithful have been taught to believe this slaughter is necessary, according to "God's law."

Former Muslims United also educates the public as to other threats to their basic human rights and freedoms under Islamic or sharia law, which is being pushed in non-Muslim countries around the world. One look at the  kingdom of Saudi Arabia reveals the fundamentalist Islamic state under sharia lawand this way of life is being exported globally along with an agenda to compel sharia law upon the non-Muslim population as well. Along with sharia comes apostate murder, legal wife beatings, "honor killings," child marriages, public beheadings, stonings and hangings, limb amputations, discrimination against and forced covering up of women, as well as other brutal and harsh atrocities and mistreatments of human beings.

dr. wafa sultan book god who hates evils of islam

Wafa Sultan is an active and courageous critic of Islam at its fundamental core, which includes not only sharia law but also violent exhortations within the Koran/Quran itself. For her vitally important work helping preserve democratic and free society, Dr. Sultan lives under a constant security threat. In order to tell her story and spread her message, she has a new book out explaining the quagmire in which much of the world finds itself currently sinking, A God Who Hates: The Courageous Woman Who Inflamed the Muslim World Speaks Out Against the Evils of Islam. She has kindly agreed to an interview with me here on Examiner.com about her life and mission.

D.M Murdock: Dr. Sultan, thank you for honoring us with this interview. You are a courageous woman for doing what you do. The first question is, have you personally received any threats against you for your work exposing the problems with Islamic law and tradition? Are any of these threats specifically because of your very public apostasy from Islam? How has your life been impacted by these threats?

"I receive death threats on a daily basis."

Wafa Sultan: I receive death threats on a daily basis. I'm a well-known writer in the Arab world. My writings expose me to millions of devout Muslims who have nothing positive to prove but the sheer cruelty of their teachings. Islam has deprived them of their intellectual ability to face criticism with an effective and acceptable way.

Being born and raised as a Muslim has helped me to realize how serious these threats are. While I try to not let the threats interfere with my mission, at the same time I don't ignore them either. Prior to the release of my book A God Who Hates, I was forced to go into hiding. It hasn't been easy, but since I believe in my mission, nothing will deter me from accomplishing my objective.

DM: You were born and raised in a country—Syria—that, although it supposedly has a "secular" government, is largely Muslim. How was life different in Syria than it has been since you became an American citizen? Specifically as a woman, how is your life different from what it would have been, if you had stayed within the Syrian Muslim culture?

WS: The idea of "secular" government is a misconception that needs to be clarified. There is no secular government in the Islamic world. Some governments pretend to be secular for two main reasons: 1. To prove to the West that they are "secular" and in that way to benefit economically from its dealing with the West; and 2. The despotic governments are always threatened by Islamists. That leaves those autocratic regimes with no choice but to hit the Islamists with an iron fist.

The continuous conflict between the two evils doesn't mean that the government is less Islamic. In Syria, as long as Islamists don't bother the governmentespecially the president and his familythey are free to do whatever they wish. For the last twenty years, the Islamists with the help of Saudi money have played a major role in radicalizing the Syrian public, while the Syrian government has been turning a blind eye.

The situation under Islamic Sharia is bad in every Islamic country, but the level of strictness is different from one country to anotherdepending on the degree to which these laws are applied and followed. On a scale of one to ten where #1 is the least and #10 is the worst, I would grade Syria #6 compared to Saudi Arabia, which deserves to get a #10.

However, my life in America is not comparable to my life in Syria at any aspect. Since I left my country in 1989, I have been enjoying my life as a free person. Regardless of the threats I receive ,I express myself freely and speak my mind without the fear of being killed by my family and associates.

Do you think that if I lived in Syria I could answer your questions freely the same way I'm doing it now?

DM: When you earned your American citizenship, you learned about the U.S. Constitution. What are some important differences between the American Constitution and Islamic/sharia law, as you understand them?

WS: In essence, I began learning about the U.S. Constitution the first moment I arrived in the United States. I learned about the Constitution not necessarily by reading it but rather by experiencing life as a free woman—freedom that has been granted to me under the full protection of the American Constitution. Since then, I have been enjoying my life as a liberated human being, able mentally and intellectually to make my own choices and by that shape my destiny.

"Under Islamic sharia, a woman is not considered a free being. She is mentally unfit to decide her own life."

In contrast, under Islamic sharia, a woman is not considered a free being. She is mentally unfit to decide her own life, so she is to be under her husband’s control. She has no right to marry a man of her choice without her father's or another male family member’s consent. She has no right to divorce by her choice or to gain her children’s custody in case of divorce. The value of her life is half the value of her husband.

In brief, women are the commodity of their husbands and extended family, and therefore their free choice is entirely restricted under Islamic sharia.

DM: As a psychiatrist, how important do you feel are freedom of thought and speech to the emotional, psychological and spiritual health of a human being?

WS: Humans can't prosper intellectually, mentally and emotionally without being able to think and express their thoughts freely. Throughout history, great civilizations have always been the product of free minds. If we take a look at any tyrannical society, regardless of the nature of its oppression, religious or politics, the results are nothing short of coercion, poverty, and backwardness at all aspects of life.

There is an Arabic saying which we repeat but never apply: "A healthy body is always managed by a healthy mind." It's a matter of fact that our physical health is also a product of our healthy mind. Therefore, a human being will never have a healthy mind unless he is able to nurture and express it freely.

DM: As an ex-Muslim, do you consider yourself an atheist or secularist, or do you adhere to a different set of religious beliefs or spiritual practices? Or perhaps none of the above?  Do you agree that people should be free to believe or disbelieve in religious dogma of whatever kind, so long as they do not impose it and themselves on others?

"Generally speaking, I consider myself a spiritual person who believes in the existence of a divine power that to some degree controls this universe."

WS: It depends on how we define secularism. Generally speaking, I consider myself a spiritual person who believes in the existence of a divine power that to some degree controls this universe. I consider this power to be a source of positive energy that can inspire human beings to be kind and compassionate. I don't follow a specific religion, but I respect the right of others to freely choose and practice theirs. My simple philosophy is, you have the right to worship a stone, so long as you don't hit me with it.

DM: If you had one thing you could say to the American public, what would it be?

WS: In my book, A God Who Hates, I tell my life story, through which the reader can get an intimate understanding of lifeespecially a woman’s life in an Islamic society and the ominous reality of Islam in general. It is imperative for Americans to get educated about this topic, including on the foundation of the Islamic religion and its political ideology.

There are four main entities in our society that need the proper education:

1. Government officialsespecially those who deal with our securitymust acquire the knowledge by studying Muslims texts, including Koran and the Sunna from Arabic sources, word for word without alteration of the texts. That will underscore the predicament of political Islam, which aspires to submit the western world under Islam and sharia.

"The media needs to avoid being politically correct, and be forthright in discussing brutal Islamic related news stories."

2. The media needs to avoid being politically correct, and be forthright in discussing brutal Islamic related news stories. Unfortunately, the heartbreaking stories of honor killings are gradually growing in number here in the U.S. as well as in Europe.

3. The academia needs to avoid whitewashing Islam and to teach Islamic studies from a scientific perspective so that students get the correct information. For example, students need to know the reality of Jihad from a geopolitical and historical perspective. In that way they may learn the devastating consequences of Islam’s expansion throughout history and the brutality which had been used to conquer and spread Islam.

4. Lastly, non-Muslim proponents of interfaith dialogue must get a comprehensive education on various important Islamic concepts from reliable scholars of Islam as opposed to apologist scholars like Karen Armstrong and Professor John Esposito. With proper and solid information, participants in interfaith dialogues need to be bold enough and ask their Muslim counterparts the harsh and unpleasant questions regarding Islam. That may generate some productive outcome in forcing Islamists who are mistakenly considered "moderates" to unveil their true intentions.

In short, the pervasive political correctness in our society is an epidemic of great proportions. With its moral relativism and multiculturalism, it leads to a drastic decline of Western values, and if  it continues unrestrained, it may well lead to the destruction of Western civilization as we know it today.

DM: Thank you, Dr. Sultan, for your courage and intelligence in speaking out on behalf of human rights for people worldwide. We wholeheartedly support your efforts and hope you will be safe and active for a very long time.

PLEASE PASS ALONG THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO AMERICA!

Talk about “The God Who Hates”, Ms. Sultan should be doing fair & balanced comment and discuss the Jewish god starting in Deuteronomy & continuing to Zionism & “Cast Lead” as a god that beats all others in hatred. And re the media and academia needing to be this or do that, how naive. Doesn't she know who owns or controls them?

James has said it best. Examine the Judeo-Christian Godhead as that is more then likely the source of both.

It appears to me that THEY use HEGALLIAN DIALECTIC and via this method they create both PROTAGONIST (christianity) and ANTAGONIST (Islam) and pit the two against one another. They hide "betwixt and between" as they are aware that both are false.

It's amazing how people use Saudi Arabian "Sharia Law" and other so-called "Islamic" countries to justify the lack of credibility and moral/ethical value that the real Islamic sharia law holds. There does not exist a muslim country or real muslim leader or real "Sharia law". If real islamic law were implemented the first people to be publicly stoned to death would be the so-called "Royal" Saudi Family. Islam has been hi-jacked for a long time and any attempt to form real islamic laws ends in someone being imprisoned, executed or defamed. All this lady is rebelling against in a non-muslim regime. Look at the reality of it, real muslim/christian values only breed good pious people, these are not real muslims lady, wake up and smell the usury.

Pantheist views of the cosmos can give answers to the riddle of existence. Check unknown authors like Danish world-teacher Martinus, 1890-1981. Or Walter Russell, 1871-1963, a friend of Mark Twain. Also my site mathildenhoehe.org. "Islam" or other fanitical dogmas (materialism, capitalism, nihilism included) can not rule on the long term, because the evolution of both intellect and feeling, in men and women, is progressing constantly. Ms Wafa Sultan is only rebelling against doctered version of Islam dished out by Saudi Arabia. The whole concept of Allah has been hijacked by Jesuits created sect of Wahabis and Christianised with concept of God. What is Allah? Everything IS energy. It is a paradoxical dichotomy, much like the light of the Sun; the blackness still exists beneath it, so within blackness there is always the potential of light, and within light the potential of blackness. So even if light fills all creations, blackness remains dominant beneath, as within the asymmetrical order of creation the unchangeable state always underpins the changeable.

Another example of this is silence. Sounds fill the silence, but the silence still exists beneath, and will exist after the sounds have been completed. An asymmetrical order, the system works only one way and the dichotomy of light, or silence, mirrors the dichotomy of Allah.

What is the speed of darkness? !Inifinite! This sea of dark mass traverses the universe instantly and when some of its mass slows down to 186,000 mp/s it becomes qualitative and quantitative. So light is the slowest when it comes to the matters of physics and without the dark mass light would have no meaning or importance.

So what does this have to do with Islam or Ms. Sultan? I'm not sure, but the tired arguments that religions are as brutal as secular governments always ignores the baseline fundamental truths of faith. It is people who corrupt governments and religious faiths.

I know very little about Islam and I suppose it is what it is. I'm a disciple of Christ and my faith is in direct opposition to Islam, however it is imperative that I, as a christian, judge not a muslim rather to share the teachings of Christ and walk away. Its his choice at the moment. If Islam indeed forces its beliefs by threats of punishment or worse than it is doomed to failure. Good day

Everything is Energy, but it must be understood exactly what all energies are, time, mass, space, plasma, light, life, thought, every known or unknown form of energy ever conceived, they are all information, grains of information that interact, transmute, expand, constrict, but always build upon themselves, expanding out in all realities. These energies all follow simple underlying constraints, firstly they are all based on pure dichotomies, and the very nature of realities are always what lies between, secondly energy is in a state of evolution, its constitution needs to ultimately transubstantiate into ever more complex forms of information, thirdly all knowledge is connected, a single ocean of unity.

We exist in an illusion of the perception of the real, generated from the manifest physical, while the REAL always remains hidden to our perception. The basis of Islam is "THERE IS NO GOD,ONLY ALLAH EXISTS". Where Allah is unified between nothingness and absolute by its 99 Attributes

Islam is not a 'cool' religion. It doesn't keep up with current trends on fashion, dating, gay-marriage, the way Christianity keeps up. It is too straightforward and upfront about roles of man and women in society, about making peace, about fighting a war, on matters of manner and piety. Islam is to simple and straightforward on "There is no god but God" rule, and it is very straightforward on "there is no compulsion in religion" rule.
So, why don't you get it? It's simple, actions of some people and countries are portrayed in a context of religion of Islam, and you buy it!

If it is not imposed by the clerics, the people are taught to impose it themselves on each other. It is a kill or die way of life. Your sister glanced at a man or perhaps stood in the doorway with out the hijab. Kill her or the entire family will face persecution. And yes, that is a true story. we need to wake the people up. If Islam will not come into the 21st century then the smelly cancer must be distroyed. It has become obvious to many Muslims that there is something seriously wrong with Islam. But what is that? What is wrong with Islam? Was Muhammad merely a sick human being and a liar? Is Islam the corrupted product of many different hands?
Upon learning the truth about Islam, honest people of integrity begin the profoundly liberating process of apostasizing from Islam. It can definitively be stated that no decent person of sane mind, knowing the real facts about Islam, could remain in the religion with a clear conscience. We, the informed apostates of Islam, know for certain that Muhammad’s Islam is, in reality, the exact opposite of what it claims to be.
Most Muslims genuinely do not know how evil the Islamic ideology really is. It is an indisputable fact that Islam institutionalizes discrimination against women and non-Muslims, effectively puts an end to freedom of speech and conscience, and en

So let us not forget the past evils of Christianity as well. All any religion does is generate bigotry and intolerance of others who's desire is to live a peaceful life. We need to question in all seriousness; Is there a God? I very much doubt it.

Where do these critics of Ms Sultan come from? Read the Koran. Read "The Life of Mohammed". The slave trade in Africa was run by muslims for the past 1300 years. Most muslim countries have had all the jews and christians removed. The Koran says that non-muslims must be killed. It matters not a whit if Ms. Sultan is a spy or a fantasist. It matters not if there is not 1 ex-muslim. We can all read for ourselves what muslims believe, and we can see in so many muslim countries just how they put these hateful beliefs into practice.

The only good thing to come from 9/11, 7/7, Bali, Madrid, etc. is that the West has been sent warning fire. We have to act now. If muslims want their religion, then let them leave and go to muslim countries.

Islam is not a religion in the same sense that the non-Muslim world understands religion.

It is a political and economic control system whose methods of control have a thin layer of religion on top.

Without freedom of conscience and the ability to question either scripture or the leaders, what you have left is a total disregard for human freedom.

As such, I strongly urge world leaders to see Islam as an ancient political party that more closely resembles the party that conquered most of Europe between 1939 and 1945 than a religion. The aim for world domination is the same.

Now go sleep in the beds you made and stop using infidel inventions against us, you hypocrites

In the U.S. and most Western nations, common law trumps religious law, but in most Muslim Countries, if there is common law at all, it is trumped by Sharia, esp. if the victims are women. It is not the U.S. Constitution as such that protects her, but rather the tradition that murder, rape and assault on women are crimes with severe penalties, and that committing them under some sort of "religous context" does not alter the consequences.

The Old Testament also mandated the extermination of non-Jewish peoples on occasion, so in that sense it is not totally fair to single out the Koran. In that context, it could be said that "God the Father" of the Old Testament, and the "Allah" of the Koran were similar in that they fostered genocide in certain situations. The difference is that in countries where the Old Testament religion is followed by Jewish people, they recognize that the common law of that particular nation renders that part of their tradition outmoded, if not totally immoral.

Just surprised she has made no mention of child genital mutilation no boys and girls in Islam. It is an unacceptable practice which must be outlawed. Otherwise I agree with her 100%

Well the Jews are guilty of this too, and we need to be careful to condemn the practice wherever it arises.

I have traveled a lot and made friends all over the world.I have not found anyone bad or immoral based on their religion teachings rather if they are,its their ignorance about religion. No religion in the world preaches immorality, injustice or cruelty. Its the set up of the deprived upbringing, sources or personal interests that tailor a system of injustice.Whether its judiasm, christianity or islam,if we follow the track,we all share the same beginning, its the end which is different but for some reason we like to cling on to the end only?

To the illuminated one - you clearly are in the dark, not just about Judaism, but about history. There is ONE democracy in the middle east. One tiny sliver of land - the only one that actually protects Muslim women from the atrocities committed against her in the name of her faith; a tiny place that produces untold intellectual properties, has turned a dessert into a blossom while her neighboring country, Syria, has destroyed its water infrastructure; one place that has drawn the line in the sand between democracy and brutality in a tumultuous time; one country that waited 8 YEARS and endured 12,000 rocket attacks before going after the terrorists when any other nation would have said enough within weeks: one country whose doctors give medical care to terrorists side by side with their victims; one country that has given land back for peace, only to be proven wrong by her enemies; and that little land is ISRAEL. I could go on, but this matters naught to someone has thick skulled as you

    Hi there
I say Bravo to you for posting this. Christianity and Judaism may also have illustrious pasts, but the difference between those faiths and Islam are numerous in todays Modern world, so anyone who turns to the past to point fingers is really missing the message here. ISLAM, and the voices that speak most loudly from its bosom at this time, are rife with conflict and problems that undermine/have undermine civilization. I say keep up the good fight and bit by bit intelligent, thoughtful, emotionally mature and historically informed individuals will also find the courage to join you in this message.

@ JimLee: "If we put Islam in the same time frame as Christianity, then Christianity about 600 years ago was also a killer of those who refused to convert."

But you are omitting something here, Christianity did that 600 years ago and Christians don't go around murdering apostates whereas Islam is still doing it today. So your suggestion of the moral equivalence of Christianity and Islam's historical atrocities falls pathetically short of any standard of objectivity.
