Jimmy Carter: 'Stop abusing women in the name of God'

Jimmy Carter enjoying a day out
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Last week, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter released a widely disseminated statement concerning the global mistreatment of women based on religious texts and doctrines. Mr. Carter was so disturbed by the sexism within his own church organization, the Southern Baptist Convention, that he left it after 60 years. In his commentary, Carter quoted the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and the Bible (Gal 3:28) to demonstrate his own integrity as concerns race, religion and gender. He then remarked:

This view that women are somehow inferior to men is not restricted to one religion or belief. It is widespread. Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths... The male interpretation of religious texts and the way they interact with, and reinforce, traditional practices justify some of the most pervasive, persistent, flagrant and damaging examples of human rights abuses."

Carter is to be commended for having the daring—a sad statement in itself that it is "daring" to speak out on behalf of women—to take on the religious tyranny that has ruled this planet for too long. As he says, he is in a later stage of his life and as part of a mysterious group of "Elders" he has been selected to publicize this very enlightened view concerning women and religion. Further displaying this vital courage, Carter declares:

The justification of discrimination against women and girls on grounds of religion or tradition, as if it were prescribed by a Higher Authority, is unacceptable."

We wholeheartedly agree, and we thank Mr. Carter and the Elders for taking this sorely overdue step—let us hope that others will follow suit and that those individuals still engaging in misogyny and sexism, religiously based or otherwise, will feel ashamed of themselves.

"Holy Scriptures" themselves are sexist

Moses Exhorting His Followers (Numbers 21)
Moses Exhorting His Followers (Numbers 21)

Unfortunately, Carter's closing contention concerning the traditional establishers of the three Abrahamic religions, Christ, Paul, Moses and Muhammad, all calling for "proper and equitable treatment of all the children of God" stumbles, for, while it is diplomatic, it is certainly not true. According to the Bible, Moses was responsible for an atrocious amount of genocide, such as at Numbers 31:15-18, where, after his Israelites slaughter thousands of Midianites, Moses asks,  "Have you let all the women live?" The great Jewish prophet next gives an ethnocentric reason to murder them all and then remarks:

Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

What this last line means, naturally, is that the Israelite warriors get to kidnap the young virgin girls and use them as sex slaves.

In the meantime, the "Prince of Peace" Jesus Christ stated he was not here to bring peace but a sword (Mt 10:34), and made other remarks that create enmity:

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these [are] the beginnings of sorrows." (Mk 13:18)

If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." (Lk 14:26)

Paul, of course, repeatedly made derogatory remarks about women, such as:

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. (1 Cor 11:3)

Sounding very proto-Islamic Paul follows this sexist commentary with a diatribe against women's hair and an exhortation for women praying or prophesying to cover their heads. (1 Cor 11:5ff) After these comments, Paul says that men were not created for women, but women were made for men. (1 Cor 11:8).

There's more woman-dominating speech at Ephesians 5:22-24:

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands."

At 1 Timothy 2:11-15, Paul goes on a rant that women should be quiet and submissive, because Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden, dictating that all women—who are by their mere gender guilty by association—can redeem themselves by bearing children and being modest:

Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith and love and holiness, with modesty."

And there's more in the "Good Book" that contradicts Carter's euphoric and hopeful interpretation, such as Paul repeatedly exhorting slaves to obey their masters, as at Titus 2:9:

Bid slaves to be submissive to their masters and give satisfaction in every respect."

The pro-slavery and pro-government biblical rhetoric can also be found 1 Peter 2:13-18:

Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing right you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext of evil; but live as servants of God. Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

"Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to the kind and gentle but also to the overbearing."

How can we "honor all men" and then allow some to be slaves to overbearing masters? There would seem to be (at least) two voices here, including a propagandist for the emperor.

Nor does the Koran, attributed to Muhammad, speak out against slavery—indeed, fervent followers of Islam often label themselves "slaves of Allah." While Surah 2:256 says there is "no compulsion in religion," this passage is abrogated by later ones stating:

The only true faith in God's site is Islam" (Q 3:19)

He that chooses a religion over Islam, it will not be accepted from him and in the world to come he will be one of the lost." (Q 3:86)

It is not for true believers men or women to take their choice in the affairs if God and His apostle decree otherwise. He that disobeys God and His apostle strays far indeed." (Q 33:36)

Unbelievers in Allah, the Koran and Muhammad are threatened with the hideous punishment of eternal hellfire, as at Surah 2:92-6:

God's curse be upon the infidels! Evil is that for which they have bartered away their souls. To deny God's own revelation [the Koran], grudging that He should reveal His bounty to whom He chooses from among His servants! They have incurred God's most inexorable wrath. An ignominious punishment awaits the unbelievers."

Demon in Islamic Hell torturing women (edited)
Demon in Islamic Hell torturing women (edited)

There exist centuries-old Islamic images of Muhammad in Hell watching a demon torture women for uncovering their hair. There is nothing "equitable" about the treatment of women as ordained in the Koran:

Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient.

Concerning a man's right to marry a woman, the Koran (4:24) remarks:

Also, [forbidden to you are] married women, except those whom you own as slaves."

If these slave women are married, there must have been husbands somewhere, and one may presume that they are no longer alive, having been murdered by those who have enslaved their wives. Equitable?

As we can see, there is a serious problem with Mr. Carter's heartfelt commentary, but we can overlook his current sunny perspective, so long as it increasingly becomes understood that the religions and their scriptures themselves are hardly devoid of sexist speech that is merely being "misinterpreted" by men in order to hold sway over women.

Indeed, contrary to Carter's conclusions, the rampant misogyny and sexism found within religion are readily traceable to the attitudes of the alleged founders of organized faiths. We need to get at the heart of the issue, which is that humans possess a strange megalomaniacal quirk causing them to think that the God of the cosmos is writing books especially for them—books full of atrocity, hatred, oppression, enslavement, terror, warfare and genocide. That's the real problem, because books serve as brainwashing propaganda—it does no good at all to talk about "erroneous interpretation" when in fact there is no other way to interpret calls to hegemony, oppression, domination, bigotry, cruelty, discrimination and violence.

What the world really needs are new and improved writings revered for their enlightened content, not for their purported supernatural origins. Championing Dark Age and Stone Age texts will never lead to an evolved and peaceful world, no matter how hard we try to find seeds of goodness in them. Instead of desperately searching for seeds in bloated bags of intellectual refuse, let us obtain fresh sacks of seeds! And then let us plant these seeds of true human enlightenment with all due haste for our future generations.

It's easy to measure individuals' ethics against your own ideals. Have you measured them against prevailing standards at the time they purportedly lived? I agree with your rejection of subhuman treatment of others but the blame cannot be laid squarely on religion as such, unless you want to include Stalinism, Maoism as well as all other movements of social uprising that caused millions of deaths and lots of suffering as religious. The blame lies on all sides of the debate. It is a more pervasive problem of the human condition that is not directly attributable to religion. These formerly religiously sanctioned views were products of the underlying problems of ignorance, hatred and greed found everywhere. Most religions were at least earnest attempts to get beyond these "sins". What you are doing is comparable to what Jesus and Mohammad did within their own cultural environments. Join the club and see how far you get. Those you blame tried to do exactly what you are trying to do.

As a fundementalist, evangelical,Bible believing Christian I have to call him out on his mis-understanding on the natural role of the woman. I know he probably means well but the Bible makes it clear that a women are to be subserviant toward men. It's as plan as black and white. Read the Bible for yourself and stop listening to these government preachers. They speak with a forked tounge and nothing true is uttered from their mouths. They worship another Jesus and believe in another gospel other than the truth as established by the true savior of mankind that died on the cross at Calvary. This should be a warning to all true believers that those who add or subtract from the Bible God himself will add to their punishments and subtract from their rewards come judgement day.

God is love and he created both genders so why would'n't he want men and women to be equal? It makes perfect sense to me. Jimmy is right! Mrs. Murdoch is taking the Bible out of context. She has an agenda ot defaming Christians,God,and his son Jesus. I feel sorry for people like her because if she does'nt get right with the Lord before she dies we all know where she'll go and it won't be a very nice place either. Congratulations! Acharya you are great. I myself support a "liberating humanism" for long on all my internet-sites on the internet-schreibtisch (search in Google) which means a virtuell internet-desk for all my activities since 1998. Also I am the founder of a religion "DEHismus". DEH - D for Big Bang and the Pre-start of the world, E for eternity, and H for infinity. Deh means in the language of the Kru and Grebo mother. The Religion begins with logical conclusions about the wholeness of women and men and the natural biology of the infant and his desire for unity of the parents. In the very -+beginning was not any "word". The "apostles" of this religion are the ideal love and parental pairs that exist in every generation of mankind.

The view from Carter made me very happy. I will recommend the text on my website.

Jimmy "The Buffoon" hasn't always been so insightful.
I think back to the days of his presidency when he backed a "holy" man to oust the Shah of Iran, without first doing his homework.
The result? When Khomeini came to power, he began by eliminating all his former "enemies" (real or imagined), killing thousands while "The Buffoon" turned a blind eye, and the US lost a valuable ally, weakening our bargaining power in that part of the world. Let's not even mention the US Embassy fiasco.
He has been more trouble to the U.S. than any other president, more so since he left office, kowtowing to Middle East and South American dictators and other sponsors of terrorism.

I'm sure that Carlos also means well, but he obviously has only read the parts of the Bible that advance his own beliefs. Has he read such edifying statements as how a man may sell his own daughter into slavery (Exodus 21:7), and that parents are to have their own children stoned to death for being "rebellious" (Deut. 21:18-21)? Has he read that, when a a group of little children teased a priest, Elisha, "God" sent bears to tear forty-two of them apart (2 Kings 2:23); of how "God" commanded his "chosen" people to murder a million men, women and little children, including babies still in the womb, according to the vile book of Joshua, and of other even worse horrors, not only commanded, but even perpetrated by "God". The record of this "God" in the Old Testament is the record of a demon that dwells in darkness (Exodus 20:21, Deut. 5:22, Psalm 97:2). This is certainly not the God of intelligent, moral and compassionate human beings. This is also plain as black and white.

1 Corinthians 1:20-25 (ESV) 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

An example of modern extremism by Muslims is the Ottoman Empire. The chief Muslim cleric, Mustafa Hayre Bey, proclaimed a jihad on 11-14-1914 which sanctioned the killing of all Christians everywhere, except in Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire which were allies. The only ones killed though, were the Armenians, Syrians, Assyrians and Greeks in Turkey (One key factor was that Armenians had long been forbidden to own weapons). See: 'THE BURNING TIGRIS, The Armenian Genocide and America's Response', Peter Balakian, 2003, HarperCollins Publishers Inc.,; and, 'Warrant for GENOCIDE, Key Elements of Turk-Armenian Conflict,' Vakahn N. Kadrian, 1999, Transaction Publishers. Of course, the western powers did very little to help, even though it was extremely well documented by press and dipomats. The strategic importance of getting Turkey as an ally over-rode all humanitarian considerations. Today, even Israel refuses to acknowledge this jihad/genocide for strategic considerations, no doubt

Rejecting the word of God is nothing new. Satin has always wanted to discredit, distort, and destroy Gods word. D.M. Murdock is trying exactly the same thing by selling it wrapped in new politically correct clothing of the time.

Satin successfully discredit, distorted, and destroyed Gods word with Eve. How did God respond? He said he would put enmity between satins seed, and the seed of the woman. What, women do not have seed, so what did He mean. God was speaking of the coming of Jesus, the redeemer of sin that had entered the world though the discredeting, distroting, and distuction of His Word.

Did this spot stain? No. He tempted the very seed God spoke of when he tempted Jesus during his 40 days and nights in the wilderness. How and with what did Jesus always and without exception reply to satin temptation? Jesus respond at all times with the word of God - unchanged, unmodificed and unmolsested, and he prevalied. That is the power of the word.

The true God would be all powerful and would easily stop Satan from acting. If Satan could be successful over God, then obviously God is weak and is not the true God. My life has been a mass of contradictions partly because my childhood was saturated with the Christian religion which, also, is a mass of contradictions, as demonstrated by scholar D.M. Murdock-Acharya_s. The harm that's been done to me and the world by Chrisianity and other religions can't be unraveled by me, but thanks to her publications and commentaries, I can now skillfully and truthfully pinpoint significant elements of Christianity as the cause of those problems.
I attended Catholic Mass six days per week every week during my 5th,6th,7th, and 8th grades. Near the end of every Mass, as part of the Mass, was a procedure that required us to tap our clenched fists three time against our chests. And with each tap we all said,"Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa." In 5th grade at the age of eleven I couldn't understand why, and still today, I can't understand why it's mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa." To Acharya I'll say,"Gratias tibi ago." Doubtless formalized religion causes division within the human family. Equally various "isms," including communism, fascism and capitalism cause division. These are all exclusive of any outside the club. Misogyny is also culpable as it effectively denies the validity of approximately half the population. Most religions refer to the divine as "he" not "it." This reference is convenient we are told for the lack of a suitable asexual subjective pronoun. However "he's" usage is universal for subjective descriptions of both woman and men. Why?

The problem, beside not having an appropriate word, is that the conservatives amongst us take this reference to "he" as justification for raising "he" over "she" in both the religious and secular worlds. I for one love the differences and nuances of the two sexes, these being complimentary rather than superior and inferior. Another "ism" holds some hope - "humanism." Perhaps read the UN Human Rights Declaration for guidance on a way forwar

The Sun heals, it will also fry your ass if you are bad and stay out in it to long. Don't look at your god, the sun, he will blind you. But a sunset you can see the SON walking on the water as a flickering reflection. The Sun sleeps during stormy seas, the boat rocks, we all are afraid. Fear not, the Sun awakes, commands the storm to end. The clouds dissipate, and the Son brings calm waters. The Sun is truly a wonder and is eternal, giving of herself as a mother to her children. In spite of the latest appeals and actions of Jimmy Carter, he is a player (half-witting at the very least). The guy wouldn't his head from a hole in the ground. He was well know for being a compulsive liar and exagerrator.

However, the message is one we can take seriously for ourselves in spite of what ever Jimmy Carter is up to now. Never needed him to preach about the treatment of women ever. Coming from you, the thinking man in the street, divorced from religous indoctrination and not having been 'President' means far more to me, than some has-been celebrity of very dubious worth. NO, I don't think he has changed. Just putting up a show for attention.

Modern feminism and the so called "equal rigths" is a deception. It does not free women but rather makes them into men. What women really need, is that society acknoledges and recognizes womenhood and the importance of it. Not women abandoning childbirth and going to have a career, but being honored because of their special role.

Jimmy Carter? A voice for women? I hardly think so.

"I've looked on many women with lust. I've commited adultery in my heart many times. God knows I will do this and forgives me."

    JIMMY CARTER, Playboy magazine, 1976

I feel sorry for each and every one of us who finds themselves still enslaved by a form of mind control.

I had the common sense to question why it was perfectly acceptable for "King" Solomen to have 3,000 concubines and wives whilst it was an unredeemable sin for a woman to prostitute herself? Hmmmmmm.......seems like someone (with a penis) was making up all the rules.
    How convenient.
I am sorry, but I have to laugh at the idiocy of this cult mindset. Religion is a farce and would make for an hysterical tragic comedy.....if it were not for all the infanticide, genocide, incest and women hating goin on this bigoted tome.

    Time to grow up.

It just has to be true that people like Cathy don't actually read the Bible--or their brains have built-in washing mechanisms for all the horrible crap that's in there.

Are we evolving out of this credulous state of mind? I hope so, because that is the only answer. Keep up the evolutionary pressure, Acharya. Great work!

So you really were talking about satin and not Satan? My mistake. So what does God have against a piece of cloth? Why would Christ use power against a piece of cloth?

As I read through the commentary, it underscores one inconvenient truth: the "Bible" is full of inconsistencies and misinformation. One can build a case for almost any atrocity, or any good deed, by quoting scripture. When I read in II Chronicles 4:2, for example, that a 10-cubit diameter "molten pool" is 30-cubits round, I must ask, wouldn't "God" know the actual value of PI (which even in ancient times was known by mathematicians to be closer to 3-7/22 than "3")? The Bible, it appears, was written by oh-so-fallable humans, not by "God" - and saying that "God" wrote it is disingenous sacriledge at best, and mere political propaganda, more likely. The apologists have their flimsy rationalizations, of course, but for rationalists, these are just so much fantasy.

I firmly believe that the "Good Book" in all it's versions especially the oldest parts have Lucifer as God. The I am that I am, but don't ask me my name.

The wrtings are a litany of murder, genocide, abuse of human rights, child abuse and abuse of power in all it's terrible forms.

Read Genisis, Exhodous, Leviticus, Duteronomy and Numbers and show me a loving caring God.

There is only a mad male hateful god, constantly exhorting "his" followers to all the above "terrorist" actions.

Only power mad men could have produced these chapters to control people especially women and women's sexuality.

    Control through fear.

Any God who "needs or wants" is no god.

Does anyone really believe that if women had primacy this would be a better world? That they would not be abusers themselves? That within them there is a purity that men lack?
You might want to study up on the Godesses of the past.
