Free summer events at Seattle Public Libraries

The Seattle Public Library is offering several free events and classes this summer at various locations around the city. The entire calendar of events can be found on the Seattle Public Library website www.spl.org. Here are some examples of the events offered:

Listen to author readings and lectures  at select libraries throughout the summer. Topics range from poetry to doggie yoga. Ages 13 to adult.

Enjoy the West African performers from Gansango Music & Dance  as they share an African festival called "Kaleta" with dance, story telling and drumming.  Performances are held at various library branches through July. Suitable for all ages.

Kids 10 and under will love Bee-Boppin' Bugs, a fun hour long performance by Nancy Stewart. Performances are scheduled through August.

Learn how to make a book with two hour classes taught by instructors from the Seattle center for Book Arts. All bookmaking materials and supplies are provided. For ages 12 and up.

Get creative with Duck Tape Mania and learn to make wallets, picture frames and more. Classes are at select library branches through July. Ages 12-18.

Tweens and teens can have fun with Game On events around the city. Popular games such as Wii, DDR and American Idol Karaoke will be provided. Age restrictions vary for each location.

Watch free movies this summer at several libraries offering Movie Time events. The popular film "Twilight" is scheduled to be shown at many locations.

In addition to all the free events this summer, kids can still sign up for the Seattle Library Summer Reading Program. Once they have read 10 books they can get a free paperback book and a free pass to the Burke Museum. See the website or visit your local branch for details.
