Unlike many of the pop/rock "singers" of today, Frank Sinatra sang the music of the finest music composers of his day. This included George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Larry Hart, etc. Frank, in his pursuit of the best material, did not write his own music as most singers seem to do today. (Note: by writing their own music the artist keeps all the music royalties).
Four songwriters most closely connected to Frank are, composer and best buddy, Jimmy Van Heusen, his early lyricist Johnny Burke ("Nancy"), and later Sammy Cahn ("Love and Marriage") and composer Jule Styne who teamed also with Cahn ("Three Coins In The Fountain").
Frank when asked "what makes Sammy Cahn's work special" simply said: “Sammy's words fit my mouth the best of all the writers.”
