Journey to Richmond: a Regent Law alum's take on the VA Governor's race

Jordan Sekulow with Virginia Governor-elect Bob McDonnell.

UPDATE: Bob McDonnell, Regent Law alum, crushes Democrat Creigh Deeds by 17% in Virginia gubernatorial race.

As I sit here in a car on the way to Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell's victory party in Richmond, I cannot help but be proud about how far my law school has come in such a short period of time.  I recently graduated from the Regent University School of Law, the same law school Democrat candidate Creigh Deeds references in his attack ads against McDonnell.  Of course, you may not have heard Regent much in the ads, instead you've heard "Pat Robertson's Law School."

Deeds and his fellow liberal elites will be shocked to learn that I, along with the majority of my classmates, passed the bar this summer.  Deeds and the left just can't understand how any of us that chose to attend a religiously affiliated, conservative university to attain our professional degrees could somehow be effective politicians, attorneys, and leaders in our community.

Deeds, who received his undergraduate degree from a small university in West Virginia, seemed to gloss over McDonnell's Notre Dame undergraduate degree.  Personally, I am proud of my undergraduate degree from the George Washington University and I'll be proud when I receive my LLM (a post-graduate degree) from Georgetown Law this May.  Yet, the degree that I'm proudest of is the degree I worked the hardest to get, my law degree.

Deeds and the left never seem to get it right.  Most voters in today's election do not have professional degrees, many will have never attended college, and yet liberals can't help themselves from attacking McDonnell about where he obtained his law degree.  This is not only a slap in the face to Regent alums across the country, it is a slap in the face to those who didn't attend "prestigious" schools ranked in the Top Tier of US News and World Report.  The attack is even broader because it's an attack on the thousands of Virginians who don't have a professional degrees and those with no degrees at all.

When will Democrats and liberals figure it out - it isn't about where you got your degree, it's about what you do with it.  If the polls showing McDonnell with a +14 point advantage going into today's election are accurate, a Regent Law alum will become the 71st Governor-elect of the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Regent Laws motto is simple: "Law is more than a profession. It's a calling."  McDonnell already answered that call while he served the Commonwealth as Attorney General.

Tonight, much to the dismay of liberal elites everywhere, McDonnell will continue his call from his new home, the Virginia Governor's mansion.  As I throw on my Regent University tie in preparation for the party tonight, all of us - especially those of us who attended universities like Regent - should be proud that a graduate of "Pat Robertson's Law School" will be the next Governor of Virginia.
