An abortion amendment, the race to 218, and Christian radio on fire

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (AP Photo)

Victory Update: The Stupak-Pitts amendment that prevents federal and taxpayer dollars from funding abortion under HR 3962 has passed 240-194. The breakdown: 176 out of 177 Republicans voted Yea, 1 Republican voted "present" - Congressman John Shadegg (AZ-3) will take heat for that; 64 Democrats out of 258 voted Yea, 194 Democrats voted No. The next battle will be keeping this language in the final House-Senate conference bill if or when the Senate passes their health care bill. Nancy Pelosi's HR 3962 is expected to pass later tonight.

Here is the link to the ACLJ's press release on this important pro-life victory.

You may think we're exaggerating on Christian radio when we ask you to "join the fight" by calling your representatives and signing our petitions. Early this morning, around 1 a.m., all the petitions, phone calls, and grassroots activism paid off. Today, when the House debates HR 3962, the Stupak-Pitts pro-life amendment will receive an up or down vote. Nancy Pelosi and pro-abortion Democrats buckled at the last minute in their race to gather the necessary 218 votes to pass HR 3962 later tonight.

Why? Because you signed petitions, made phone calls, and let your voice be heard.

Last night, a Southern congressman told Politico that, "Christian radio was aflame" in opposition to HR 3962 because it would allow federal dollars to pay for abortion on demand. This is why we ask you to join the petitions and make those phone calls. Abortion is not just a wedge issue for elections; it's an issue that both Republicans, Democrats, and Independents care deeply about. Nancy Pelosi did not want a vote today on Stupak-Pitts but, because of you, there will be one.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment is simple.  Like the often discussed Hyde Amendment which bars taxpayer and federal funds from paying for abortions under Department of Health and Human Services' programs like Medicaid, Stupak-Pitts would incorporate the same language to bar the use of federal funds for abortion under HR 3962.

First, I want to say thank you to the over 168,000 ACLJ members who signed our petition calling on Nancy Pelosi to allow a vote on this lifesaving amendment. Now, you have an opportunity to engage this specific fight again. Stupak-Pitts can pass today if the pressure and heat remain on moderate pro-life Democrats.

Here is the list (with phone numbers), prepared by ACLJ Director of Government Affairs Thann Bennett this morning, of Democrat representatives that need to receive phone calls this morning and afternoon reminding them to vote for the Stupak-Pitts amendment and the consequences for not doing so.

The ACLJ is against HR 3962 and the proposed government takeover of health care for various reasons, but our first priority in this battle is the protection of life. Preventing taxpayer and federal dollars form funding abortion would be a victory for pro-life activists across the country, an affirmation of the work we all do.

If Nancy Pelosi gets to 218 tonight and HR 3962 passes, it won't be a good night for those of us who want less government in our life. But, if Stupak-Pitts is attached to HR 3962, those of us in the pro-life activist community will know that we did our part in the battle to preserve the life of the unborn.

If you mother had the good sense to abort you, we wouldn't be dealing with your agenda for re-enslavement of women. Sometimes, I wish there was a hell because you'd burn in it for all eternity.

Thanks for keeping it clear as to what the issues are Jordan. As for horatius, Hell is reserved for those who want to go there. The free gift of life comes from One who died for you. He is willing to let you have your "choice," about life and death.

Abortion is a legal, medical procedure and it's no one's business what private, legal medical procedures a citizen is getting. But if these helmet-haired Christian males want to dictate what women can do with their bodies and lives, then I say we outlaw Viagra, too. I don't want ONE DIME of mine going to prop up aging limp penises that God saw fit to make dysfunctional. If the men are going to peer into women's crotches let's peer into their flaccid crotches, too, and demand none of our money goes to their vile chemical crutch. Abortions and autism will both be reduced, as well, if we prevent the aging soft penises from being propped up to cause all the grief old goats with their decrepit sperm can cause.

Zee: You wrote "Abortion is a legal, medical procedure and it's no one's business what private, legal medical procedures a citizen is getting."
1.) Once the procedure affects another human being, it is no longer private - it involves one human, whose life is ended, without due process, or cause. For now, the limitation of "viability" proves this.
2.) Now that YOU HAVE STATED that (I repeat): "Abortion is a legal, medical procedure and it's no one's business what private, legal medical procedures a citizen is getting." Government control and funding of mandated "healthcare" is proved to be an invalid agenda! Now Zee, you have joined the fight to stop it.
    Thank You.
horatius: Does this hateful life of yours really fulfill you? 'andrew ny' is right and you should not react, but contemplate on how you know what is right vs. what is wrong, then seek God. You are a created being, with eternal opportunity. Don't waste that.

I'm glad to see that to you preventing infanticide equates to enslavement. Well done.
While you're clearly an idiot, at least your mother had the decency to make the right choice. Better there be more idiots then murderers.

This ammendment is a trick to pass this bill. The liberals will sneak abortion back in it when the senate votes on it.

Liberals aren't ppl committing murder. Whether we like it or not women will come up w/their own private money to have abortions. When you are placed in that situation you'll find ur own resources. What we're doing is creating an environment where lower income women cannot get clean, safe abortions. Instead they will be in the living room of some quack & will ultimately get an infection/die. Even IF we manage to decrease the number of abortions we need to prepare to open our pocket books for all the welfare checks that will be going out to all these children. Life is important, but when you have a young mom that can't afford an abortion so she keeps on having welfare babies that only takes away from the honest, hard-working single moms that are struggling & can't get enough help from the government to make ends meet. Then the domino effect are children that give no contribution to society. We are digging our own graves here. We need to work on education & spreading the word. Not this.

    Conservative but rational,
So the potential end justifies the means? Should we assume God will never bless those poor souls born to poor moms? Are you saying that it is up to us to cull the herds, to prevent runaway population growth, especially amongst the low-income and typically minority populations? It is estimated that 50% of 'black' children are "aborted"! FIFTY PERCENT!
Forcing America to participate in the infanticide/genocide, by paying for the procedure with tax dollars, all the while inhibiting us from helping prevent the pregnancies BEFORE conception (i.e. teaching good, moral behavior in schools) is an evil, demoralizing plan.
It is like manditory funding of puppy-mills AND puppy euthanasia centers, because no one wants puppies.
Upwards of 50,000,000 children killed since 1973, is a poor defense for the prevention of some infections, or deaths - abortion is nearly 100% fatal to the child.
Teach morality, not murder and meaninglessness.
