Shooting troubles plagued Fordham in the Battle of the Bronx on Saturday night, as the Manhattan College Jaspers trounced the Rams by a score of 68-44 at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y.
Fordham shot 13-51 from the field over the course of the game, failing to make a three pointer, as well, going 0-11 from behind the arc. From the free throw line, the Rams converted only 48.6 percent of their chances.
Following nearly two minutes of scoreless play to open the contest, the Jaspers caught fire, jumping ahead by a score of 11-2 before Fordham head coach Dereck Whittenburg called timeout with 16:14 remaining in the opening half.
Following an Antoine Pearson thirty-footer that banked in at the buzzer for the Japers, Fordham entered the half trailing by 21 points, as the scoreboard read 39-18 in favor of Manhattan.
Nothing seemed to fall for the Rams in the opening half, as they shot a dismal 5-25 from the field, including 0-4 from behind the arc. Even the charity stripe posed a challenge to Fordham, as the Rams converted only half of their 16 free throw attempts in the first half.
Three Jaspers reached double digits in points, as Darryl Crawford, Antoine Pearson and Rico Pickett led Manhattan in scoring. Pearson took home John “Doc” Johnson Most Valuable Player Award, recording a game high 16 points on six of eight shooting from the field, including the three-point buzzer beater at the conclusion of the first half.
Chris Gaston proved to be the only bright spot for the Rams in Riverdale this evening, tallying a team-high 15 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Rams will next be in action on Saturday December 5th, as they host the Falcons of Bowling Green in a 7 p.m. start.
