When Adam Richman came to Syracuse for his August 28 show at the Great New York State Fair, he taught the Chevy Court crowds how to make a balsamic glazed salmon sandwich. And then the real fun began as Richman hosted a two-hour long DJ v. Fair Food Challenge. Five central New York radio personalities competed to eat the largest amount of ten foods Richman selected as iconic NY State Fair foods.

Richman previewed the fair foods on Friday, and selected 10 which he combined in nine individual challenges run one after the other. The individual state fair food challenges were:
#1 -- eat three pieces of salt water taffy at once, and after swallowing, whistle the theme from “The Andy Griffith Show.”
#2 -- eat five salt potatoes
#3 -- eat an entire Hot Beef Sundae from the Shake-Up Stand in the Dairy Building
#4 -- eat an entire ear of roasted corn on the cob
#5 -- chug as much as possible of a tall flask of lemonade in 10 seconds
#6 -- eat as much of a 30” long pizza fritte as possible in 10 seconds
#7 -- eat as many pieces of deep fried mac'n'cheese as possible in 10 seconds
#8 -- eat four hot Anchor Bar chicken wings and a scoop of maple syrup ice cream
#9 -- eat an entire Giannelli hot sausage sandwich with peppers on a bun
The final challenge, a Giannelli hot sausage and pepper sandwich, had to be eaten completely and was worth 10 points to the last swallower standing.

For the first four food challenges, 93Q's morning co-host Ted Long was tied with 95X afternoon drive host Stone. But Long slipped in the standings during speed rounds 5-7, winning only the pizza fritte challenge after eating about 24 inches of the fried pizza dough in 10 seconds. During the final challenge, both Long and Stone went bite for bite on their Giannelli hot sausage and pepper sandwiches. But Stone swallowed his last bite first to earn 10 bonus points and the D-J vs. Fair Food Challenge trophy.

Competitors included Good Guy Glen “Gomez” Adams from the TK99 morning show, Long from 93Q, Stone from 95X, Becky Palmer from the B104.7 morning crew and Lee Ann Taylor from the Whale Morning Show, WAAL-FM 99.1 in Binghamton. Stone won the salt water taffy, deep fried mac 'n cheese, and Giannelli hot sausage sandwich challenges, and tied with Adams in the first round of the lemonade chug-off. Adams won the hotly contested lemonade chug-off rematch, and the Anchor Bar chicken wings plus maple ice cream challenges.

Long finished 2nd overall, after winning the salt potatoes, hot beef sundae, and roasted corn on the cob and pizza fritte individual challenges. Adams finished 3rd, Palmer finished 4th and Taylor finished 5th overall.

Adam Richman's next episode of Man v. Food features his visits earlier this year to Mother's Cupboard, Heid's and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse. The episode, which includes the Mother's Cupboard fritatta challenge, airs at 9pm Wednesday, September 1 on the Travel Channel. Time Warner Cable customers in Syracuse can find Man v. Food and the Travel Channel at Ch. 41.

The next celebrity chef to visit Chevy Court is Mario Batali, who appears at 2pm on Wednesday, September 1.
