Summer is here and this year she is no joke. The temperatures have already screeched past 90 degrees and Orlando is making over its restaurant scene to pre-occupy us all from the already sweltering heat. To keep up with the changing tides here's a breakdown on which eateries are changing names and/or locations, which are closing their doors forever, and which are new to a neighborhood near you. What are the trends before getting deep into our list? First, chains. Orlando lives up to its rep as the chain restaurant capital of the country (perhaps the world.) Many new restaurant chains open a test spot in Orlando before providing franchise opportunities in other markets, and this summer is no exception. Second, seafood. Ironically as the BP Oil Spill is demolishing Florida's natural treasure trove of sea life, the Orlando restaurant market is demanding more options and offerings of all things seafood. The lesson this summer is get to the seafood while the getting is good. Plus its a good diet shift for those summertime, show-able bodies.
CLOSING FOR GOOD
O'Boy's BBQ, Winter Park - O'Boy's is having a hard time supporting their large building with a steady flow of Winter Park customers, so they are bowing out of the WP (perhaps the Four Rivers explosion has a bit to do with it) to focus on their other locations in S. Orlando and Baldwin Park.
MOVING LOCATIONS
Greek Flame Taverna, Winter Park - is taking its lamb, lemon, and oregano to the Dr. Phillip's part of town to spread the love of feta and Kalamata olives. Hey WP, don't fret. If you are craving the authentic Greek cuisine the Greek Flame Taverna is famous for, check out The Greek Corner at 1600 N. Orange Ave. The outside seating is perfect for a romantic couples evening. And the food? OPA!
Passage to India, Convention Center Area - Perhaps Orlando's most famous India eatery, Passage to India, is moving addresses to a larger and more flexible dining space only minutes from its former home on I-Drive to 6129 Westwood Blvd. (off of 528). Guests are encouraged to call with any questions 407-351-3456.
NEW TO THE AREA
Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, I-Drive Area & The Mall of Millena - To know a coal-fired pizza is to know utter pleasure of the palette sensations of crispy, hearthen baked texture of a thin yet slightly chewy crust and immaculately cooked pizza topping ingredients melted together to make a pizza fit for the Gods. Currently, the Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza restaurant concept is open for business at 8031 Turkey Lake Road Orlando, FL 32819-7384, (407) 363-9466 and added a sister store at 4048 Eastgate Drive in The Mall of Millena area.
Bluesmoke Burger Bar, Downtown Orlando - One ailment of Orlando's eats is our failure to produce one super solid burger joint (sorry Graffiti Junktion fans, but those burgers be dry!) comparable to Hot Dog Heaven. That was until Bluesmoke Burger Bar opened at 22 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801. Its still very early but this burger joint has the potential to be THE place to go for a regular or gourmet burger in Orlando. If anyone has already been, let us know how it tastes!
Bonefish Grill, OIA Area - Because Bonefish Grill is a beloved New American Seafood restaurant in Orlando and around the country, the news of the Bonefish Grill location which opened in late April out by the airport maybe old news to some but we just wanted to make sure everyone knows you can get your favorite Chilean Sea Bass or scallops as soon as you step off the plane full of screaming children. 5463 Gateway Village Circle (at the corner of Semoran Boulevard and north Frontage Road near the Orlando International Airport).
Keke's Breakfast Cafe, Winter Park - When Bakely's Cafe closed down in early 2010, the WP was concerned about losing a go-to breakfast spot. But when the renowned Keke's Breakfast Cafe took over with their infamous pancakes and waffles, all was right again in the breakfast universe.
Mitchell's Fish Market, Winter Park - Another fine dining chain operation is going to try it's luck in The Winter Park Village occupying the space the former Beluga could not support. Mitchell's Fish Market's mission is to provide the freshest seafood available focusing their menu items that range from $10-$30 on the season's harvests. 460 N. Orlando Ave. in the Winter Park Village across from the Regal movie theater complex. 407.339.FISH (3474).
Morse Market & Cafe, Winter Park - Although always intrigued by the meal DIY concept of Let's Eat I have never ventured into their neck of the restaurant niche, but now knowing more about the new Morse Market & Cafe I just might have to. This cafe offers salads and sandwiches to go or a foodie can get in their kitchen to prepare the selected recipe of the month. They offer pick-up services of prepared meals, retail items and more! This gem should be a 'must-do' on this list of summer activities. 155 E. Morse Blvd Winter Park, FL.
Nelore Churrascaria, Winter Park - Say, "Brazilian Steakhouse," anywhere in Orlando and immediately most will think of the chain Texas de Brazil in the I-Drive area. For those not looking to dine with the tourists, check out the WP's newest addition Nelore Churrascaria. This highly raved about and reviewed house o' meats has the gauchos' shave any of their fifteen cuts of meats off skewers and onto your plates until an overdose of protein is reached. 115 East Lyman Avenue Winter Park, FL 32789 (407) 645-1112
UPDATED
Eden Bar at The Enzian, Maitland - The locally-focused cuisine of our favorite indie movie house is growing to include $11 lunch specials Monday through Thursdays. If I worked in the Maitland/Winter Park/Casselbery area this would most definitely be my mid-day retreat. http://www.edenbarandrestaurant.com.au/page/lunch_specials.html
Houston's, Winter Park - This steakhouse staple with a sprawling lawn flowing into Lake Killarney and nightly live music is getting a name-lift. Houston's is now Hillstone Restaurant, after the namesake of the restaurant group which owns the Houston's brand among others. The restaurant is looking to make the name and minor concept change slowly so it can start to introduce more creative menu items to compliment the already established favorite eats the WP clientele have come to know and love.
Stardust Coffee & Video, Winter Park - Now offers brunch, hooray! It is no secret Stardust is one of this food writer's fav spots to munch, drink, and people watch so the addition of their Subversive Sunday Brunch complete with vegan options, mimosas, and breakfast burritos only makes me love that little indie hut more than ever. Check out Mark Baratelli's of TheDailyCity.com's review before mustering yourself up early on a Sunday morning, hangover and all, to beat the 12PM rush.
