Hurry one and all! Oh, you and I must hurry because Eat Local Week in Orlando started on Monday January 25th, 2010 and ends on January 31st, 2010! Eat Local Week is presented by the non-profit Slow Food Orlando organization. Orlando's Slow Food chapter is part of of the national group, Slow Food USA, "a non-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating the food traditions of North America through programs and activities dedicated to Taste Education, Defending Biodiversity and Building Food Communities." The Slow Food and Sustainability food movements seek to enrich the community's' diets, economy, and environment through the collective dedication to eating food naturally grown close to where you live. Lots of us do this already by shopping at Orlando Area Farmer's Markets and produce stands, so how can you help to achieve these Slow Food goals during Eat Local Week? Simple, eat out!
Eat Local Week promotes Orlando Area restaurants and eateries that purchase a majority if not all of their fresh and stored ingredients produced by farmers and artisans in a 200 mile radius around the city of Orlando. You can start make your own Slow Food waves tonight by heading to the Audubon Park Community Market at Stardust Coffee & Video to visit the Big Wheel Provisions booth and see Chef Tony Adams and taste his local cuisine from his home cured bacon to eggs never more than eighteen hours old! My picks for Eat Local Week after hitting the Audubon Park Community Market tonight are Mi Tomatina, Virgin Olive Market (amazing sandwiches and wraps), Luma (just had a fabulous birthday dinner there), and K Restaurant. Speaking of K Restaurant, be sure to keep an eye out for the Orlando Wine Bar Examiner, Michelle Widmer's, review of K and their local menu plus suggested wine pairings.
