Jumbo eggs, fresh from the farm
The Stietzel Family Farm is managed by brothers and sisters of the Stietzel family and overseen by Nina Stietzel who gladly gave us a tour recently. This is a beautiful farm in the rolling Connecticut countryside, (236 Gallows Hill Rd, Redding, CT) where they raise chickens, garlic, lettuce, rhubarb, and vegetables. They also sell milk and duck and goose eggs from other local farmers.
Their chickens are housed consists of a number of wheeled hen houses that they can move to fresh scratch territory every day. This is more or less the same system the Michael Pollan described in The Omnivore's Dilemma. The chickens are thus free range within these pens and are fed an organic diet, including seaweed.

You will also find that they are currently raising lettuce, garlic and asparagus, as well as huge rows of rhubarb. In their shop, they also have both standard and homogenized milk as well as their own honey, and maple sugar. They also sell kettle popped popcorn sweetened with their maple syrup and birdhouses made out of found materials.
Stietzel Family Farm sells their own eggs all year round, and vegetables in season. So far, they are selling lettuce and asparagus, but will be adding all the usual summer vegetables as they come into season. We came away with the beautiful jumbo eggs shown above, but will be back all season. You can see pictures of many of their products in the slide show below.
This is a lovely farm, a short drive from most Fairfield County towns, and a lovely place to visit, and come home with fresh eggs and veggies. Get to know your local farmers -- this is one you want to know for sure!

loving the pic's!
The rhubarb looks good. Have any good recipes? I'm sure you do!
Great pictures as always Jim.
Looks great!!! Keep up the good work Stietzel Family. Support your local growers and not the food giants that want to serve us poisoned food and pale white eggs.
