Lollipops for adults

Suckerborne adult suckers

I recently learned of a unique new business, headquartered in Darien, that is producing lollipops with adult flavors. This business, run by Megan Ferrell is called Suckerborne (get it?). Ms Ferrell is a graphic designer who decided to take her art in a new direction by founding a candy company.

Her current flavors include

    * Brown sugar, maple, bacon

    * Dark and stormy (rum and ginger beer)

    * Lemon-vodka

    * Orange dream

    * Key lime mint (key lime and white rum)

    * Snowflake mint (white rum and Tahitian vanilla)

All of the suckers are made with those actual elements. Her candies are made of 100% natural ingredients and without preservatives. In fact, the brown sugar-maple-bacon sucker has actual pieces of bacon in the candy,

and the lemon-vodka sucker has pieces of lemon peel. The suckers are made with actual rum and vodka, although, of course, the alcohol boils off during the candy making. She tells me that the maple-bacon-brown sugar sucker is her most popular flavor. (I certainly liked it.)

I watched Ms Ferrell make a set of peppermint suckers for me. This is fairly simple candy making assuming that you have the nice steel sucker molds she has. She combines sugar, corn syrup and water and boils it to the hard-crack stage, then adds flavoring (in this case oil of peppermint) and coloring if needed. Then she pours the mixture into sucker molds on a marble slab to absorb the heat.  You can lift them off and unmold them in just a few minutes. The tricks come in her proprietary methods for including her complex flavoring ingredients in the suckers. She makes the production lollipops in a commercial kitchen so I didn't get to watch her.

Suckerborne distributes nationwide, including Montana and New Jersey, although the only retail outlet so far in Connecticut is at the Silvermine Market. Look for them other places in the near future. You can also order them online, and there is a sampler pack of each of the six flavors available. Her business also makes custom lollipop shapes for various events.
