Gelato Giuiliana - The most intense gelato you'll ever taste

Gelato Giuliana

We first learned of Gelato Giuliana when they were providing free sample tastes at Zeytinia’s in South Wilton. The taste of this gelato is so intense and impressive we asked to meet with them while they were providing samples at Whole Foods in Westport. The samples they provided for us to photograp were Poma di Currant and La Giuliana (Espresso-mascarpone-chocolate).

Several years ago Giuliana Maravelle decided to retire from her hairdressing business, and eventually opened a Panini café in New Haven. It soon became apparent that such a café really ought to serve gelato, but she did not find any commercial gelato comparable to those she remembered in Italy. She went to Italy to investigate the current gelato making methods and came home to develop her own artisan gelato, using fresh, simple ingredients. This became such a popular item that people began asking her to distribute it elsewhere and Gelato Giuliana was born.

Today, five years later, Gelato Giuliana is manufactured in Wallingford, CT where they make 63 flavors, plus seasonal additions. (They are planning to expand and move their manufacturing to New Haven in two months.) Giuliana tells us that her main “secret” is to use only fresh ingredients: fresh berries, fresh milk and so forth. The fruit flavors contain no cream and thus have extremely intense flavors, and are only 40 calories per serving. Many of their other flavors contain only 2% milk which they feel contains a much more intense flavor than cream. Of course flavors like the Espresso-mascarpone-chocolate are considerably richer in calories and also an absolute delight.

Gelato Giuliana is available throughout Connecticut, in the Boston area, in New York and in Westchester County. They are also happy to talk to you about opening your own gelateria, if you have ambitions in that direction.

Hello James - Ironically, I tried Gelato Giuliana much in the same fashion you did. I was at a concert last night in Hartford, CT and they were passing out free samples and selling individual cups at the same time. I too am an avid fan of Zeytina and was actually there earlier in the day browsing the frozen dessert section and saw the gelato and almost bought it (the only problem was that it was 100+degrees outside and it would have melted). Blood Orange Raspberry was refreshing and exploding with flavor. Kudos to a small, local business owner with a hot product. Even though it's best served as a cold dish!
