We know that cinnamon tastes great, but did you realize that it is good for you, too?  Let's explore that topic.

In the beginning of every year, we start thinking about getting healthy again. For many of us, it means going on a diet or stopping smoking. But it doesn't have to be that difficult. There are many foods that we just love that are known to have great health benefits. One of those great foods is cinnamon.

First let's talk about cinnamon…..cassia and ‘true' cinnamon. Often, when you ‘think' you are buying cinnamon, you are actually buying cassia. Ceylon cinnamon is the only one that is ‘true' cinnamon. It comes from the verum and loureirii tree, among others.

Saigon, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian cinnamon are from the cassia tree. Cassia has a much stronger taste than Ceylon cinnamon. The first time I went to a Penzeys Spices store,  I used my sense of smell to determine which ‘cinnamon' was best for me. If you have a Penzeys nearby, stop in and take the ‘sniff test'. They have several types of ‘cinnamon' that are not available in your grocery store. Choose the ones you like best. For our cooking classes,  we actually have a few different types. Ask about them next time you are there.

For the purpose of this article, we will use the term ‘cinnamon' to refer to both ‘true' cinnamon and cassia since they both have similar medicinal properties.

Studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. Several studies also suggest that cinnamon may be helpful in regulating blood sugar. This can be extremely beneficial for people dealing with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. Better yet, studies have shown that cinnamon can help improve cognitive functions and memory. On top of all that, it is a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium.

So remember that eating healthy doesn't have to mean cottage cheese and peaches, that is, unless you want to sprinkle them with cinnamon.

What are your favorite uses for cinnamon or cassia?  Leave a comment so we can share.
