We were recently asked to test a few products from Bear Naked and give our opinons. Never being one to turn down something for free, we accepted the offer. We received two kids of granola; maple pecan and oats/honey with blueberries.
Granola is an old favorite, but its high fat and calorie content make it something we only eat once in a while. When the granola arrived, the first thing we did was read the label. This was not what we were expecting. First there is no high fructose corn syrup, trans fat or preservatives. That's good. But then the calories. They each contain 130 calories per 1/4 cup. So this will not be an every day treat. Looking for other redeeming qualities healthwise, we looked further into the label.
The oats and honey with blueberries granola also contained 320 mg ALA omega-3's. That's great for those wanting to have more omega-3 in their diet. It has 3 grams of fiber, too. And the wonderful smell of blueberries came wafting out when the bag opened. Out of the two types we ate, this was my favorite.
The maple pecan granola contained 20 grams of whole grain with 2 grams of fiber along with added ground flaxseed. It, too, was delicious.
So the real question is...would I buy this again if I had to use my own money? The answer is a resounding YES. It is definitely a treat, though, since eating a whole bowlful would certainly be more than the 1/4 cup serving recommended.
We already have some ideas on how to use these healthier granolas. We will post recipes as we try them. As of now, though, we ate it in the typical way; on yogurt, on ice cream and even with some milk.
