Supreme court nominee Sonia Sotomayor
President Obama’s recent Supreme Court nominee says her Latino heritage shaped her taste in food. The Federal court of appeals judge is quoted in Tuesday’s edition of the New York Daily News as savoring parts of the pig that most people would shy away form.
Just what are those parts and foods?
MORCILLA (mor-SEE-yah)
Pig intestines, baby. Or, if you prefer: blood sausage. There are recipes on line to make morcilla from scratch, but you can buy blood sausage in specialty grocery stores. And I gotta tell ya, if you had to make it from scratch, you may not want to eat it. The primary ingredients are rice and pork blood. Boulderites, you may have to look a little harder if you want to stay in town. Otherwise, head to Denver. Morcilla has 380 calories, 35 grams of fat, and 15 grams of protein per serving.
PATITAS DE CERDO CON GARBANZO (pah-TEE-tas day SAYR-doh cone garbanzo)
AKA: pigs’ feet with garbanzo beans. No, it’s not your typical Boulder fare, I know. But hey, they might be good. My dad used to love eating chicken feet. So did a lot of people from that generation. A substitute for the feet, if you’re not that bold, is pork hocks.
Many Puerto Rican recipes call for sofrito. Lots of cultures have their own version. You can look them up here. Puerto Rican sofrito is a combination of spicy and sweet peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, and culantro.
LA LENGUA Y OREJAS DE CUCHIFRITO (la LAYN-gwah ee o-RAY-hahs day koo-chee-FREE-toh)
If you speak Spanish, you know you’re hearing right. Pigs’ tongue (lengua) and ears (orejas) are the main ingredients in this dish.
Now, I can’t vouch for how good these foods are because I have never sampled them. Chances are pretty good I never will. But if the ingredients are available, if there are lots of restaurants and food stands that serve these foods (and there are – think: New York, LA), there’s gotta be something to it. After all, if Sotomayor is good enough to sit on the Supreme Court, she’s got to be a pretty good judge of things.

Comments
I don't know anything about Boulder or Stacey Rose but it sounds like she never tasted anything more exotic than veg burgers, radishes or noodles. I suggest that the people of Boulder take a trip to Phoenix to taste real ethnic food. Who knows they may find something that doesn't taste like it came out of McDonald's.
Not another story on Sotomayor!
