Shelburne Farm, the oldest pick your own apple orchard in eastern Massachusetts, is known for their fall favorites: apples, peaches, and pumpkins. They are now also open June and July to the public for strawberry picking, and I went to experience it for myself.
The farm is located about 30 miles from Boston, and took less than an hour drive. I had never picked my own strawberries, and found it fun and relaxing. It is a great way to be outside with family or friends. The benefit of strawberry picking is also knowing each and every strawberry was picked ripe and red from the vine, and could not be any fresher.
If you don’t have time to pick your own strawberries, you can swing by their store and get fresh picked strawberries, popcorn, sauces, marinades, and other options for sale. They do have a concession stand as well, with homemade ice cream, and picnic tables outside to enjoy your snacks and the view. If you are bringing along kids, farm animals are onsite and there is a hay mountain to climb.
Strawberry season just began, but there were rows of strawberries to pick and enjoy. The Shelburne Farm, with their friendly staff and delicious fruit, is definitely a place worth visiting. There is no fee to walk onto the fields; you just pay for the strawberries you picked. With this and all farms, give a call before you leave to make sure they still have plentiful plants and crops to choose from that day. Now…what to do with all these perfect strawberries?
