Fly anglers looking for an edge this winter and spring should rig their 2- to 5-weight rods with the latest lines on the water from our allies in the battle with trout. That's right, Scientific Anglers is offering a new Mastery Series called the XPS and it's ideal for delicate, cold water applications.
Recently, I switched the old line out on my Elkhorn Rod and Reel 4-weight combo for a chance to try this new advanced line from Scientific Anglers. The advanced line company says its product is good for spring creeks and gin clear waters, so what better time to give it a whirl than one of these warm days in February where you find willing trout and low flows around Deckers?
The line passed the casting test as it landed softly, ideal for the clear waters. I was able to toss short to medium casts with a gentle haul as my tiny double midges found the depths of the nearest pools. I found the new line to handle well as if featuring no memory. This new floating line feature means no tangles and easy casts even when a freeze is on.
As you've come to expect from Scientific Anglers, the Mastery Series XPS features a weight-forward design and advanced features including Dry Tip, Streamlined Loop and the company's patented Advanced Shooting Technology (AST). Not only will AST help you cast better, but it will keep this slick line clean and free of icy dirt that can bog other fly lines down.
You'll find this advanced fly line in line weights ranging from 2 to 5. It comes in dark willow and willow. In the Denver area, you'll find this fine line at places like The Blue Quill Angler in Evergreen or Charlie's Fly Box in Arvada.
