The new Sharkfin Reel by Castalia Outdoors hit the market with a bang in 2009. This creative reel is designed to catch loose line before it is reeled onto the spool.
On a conventional reel that loose line would cause a bird nest tangle on the next cast. On the Sharkfin loose line is temporarily stored on the outside of the fins until the next cast when it just cast right out.

The obvious difference is in the shape of the reel’s spool, which is also the basis of its name. The sharkfin designed spool eliminates friction resulting in longer casts and longer line life. As the line exits the spool it only contacts the tip of the fins, reducing friction. Also, the inside of the fins are tapered to allow the line to exit the spool with ease.

The reel comes in two standard sizes, the 2000 and the 4000. I use the 2000 most of the time for day to day fishing. I spool the reel with 8 pound Liquid Braid and add a 15 to 20 pound fluorocarbon shock leader. For those times when I run into some oversized fish I always have a 4000 spooled with 20 pound Liquid Braid mainline ready for action. The best part about the Sharkfin Reel is that you do not have to do anything different than with your old spinning outfit. Just use the Sharkfin and you will get longer casts, fewer tangles and longer line life. I love this reel.
