IAHV/Yogathon 2009
As part of the leadup to the May 30 Yogathon, a grand and new event in Silicon Valley, sponsoring-organization IAHV is hosting free Yoga for Fitness workshops throughout the area.
Each workshop consists of a yoga session designed to:
* build strength and flexibility
* calm the mind
* increase energy and vitality
I talked to Nandan Udiavar, director of the Yogathon 2009 organizing committee and asked why "workshops" not "classes."
First, he explains, "class" seems to indicate something that costs, and these are free sessions. More importantly, he emphasized that the workshops are being held in various locations, and designed for all levels of yoga practitioners - including the novice. People can attend one session, can attend all of them, there is no pressure to sign up for anything.
The workshops are, in short, in the spirit of the Yogathon itself, which is a fund-raiser for YES! Bay Area. Rekha Kodialbail, Yes! program director, explained the money raised at the Yogathon will go to their work in area high schools. Yes! offers a curriculum that gives students the tools for emotional growth and teaches alternative management techniques for anger and stress.
I'll write more about Yogathon 2009 later, a little closer to the event, but in the meantime, check out the free yoga classes...whoops, I mean workshops.

I attended a workshop and it is great. The Organizers of the event are doing great work in the local schools. Very impressive!
tried it - would highly recommend it! The instructor is very experienced. It costs at least $40 an hour to find a similar class.I liked the crowd as well - seem to be an eager yoga bunch.
