Pittsburgh's city steps: 44,000 steps to getting fit

Most of you are aware that climbing stairs can be a great workout and have probably read at least 20 times that it is better to take the stairs than an elevator. While this advice is excellent, I felt that it was necessary to also mention how to expand upon this idea within your very own city limits.

Pittsburgh is the home of an abundant amount of city steps, just waiting for someone to climb them. Prior to people having 2+ cars per household, city residents utilized these steps to more easily get from one neighborhood to the next. These steps, known to locals as the “city steps,” can be found all over the city, including Fineview, South Side Slopes, Lawrenceville, Greenfield and the West End. In some areas the hills are so steep, they steps were actually given a street name.

Not only are these steps an integral part of Pittsburgh’s history and a reflection of the hilly terrain, but they offer residents the ability to get in a good workout for free. Considering that a Stairmaster will cost you upwards of $1,000, the city steps provide a convenient and affordable option for Pittsburghers looking to strengthen their lower bodies and burn calories.

Events, such as the Fineview Step-a-thon and Pittsburgh Step Trek also provide an opportunity to come together and race or tour these historic steps. Not only do the city steps offer the chance to increase strength and endurance, but amazing views of the Pittsburgh skyline from various vantage points.

If you are looking to utilize the steps to burn some calories and firm up, consider these tips:

  • Always warm up before taking the steps. Some calf, hamstring and quadricep stretches should suffice.
  • Have the appropriate gear for your workout, such as a good pair of running shoes and water or sports drink to keep hydrated.
  • To increase the difficulty of your workout, try doing the steps at intervals. Walk for so many steps, and then run the same amount. Repeat that same interval until you finish.
  • Don’t skip the cool-down after your workout. Similar to your warm-up, make sure to include calf, hamstring and quadriceps stretches along with a light walk.
  • Be alert for any stairs that may not be in mint condition to avoid injury.

As always, have fun and make sure to take a look at the stunning views!
