How to eat at a 4th of July BBQ

Photo of a woman eating a hamburger "open style"Since true independence relies on not depending on another (be it authority or the control of our feelings), achieving a goal of losing weight and keeping it off, could easily fall by the wayside, especially at celebrations where the whole point is to eat -- just like everyone else.

And, as our great land of liberty welcomes another year of being her own boss, the term "independence" will resonate; not only for its significance in our nation’s history, but for its relevance when it comes to achieving our goals.

Whether this is your first Fourth of July since you’ve lost weight or you plan on it being your last at your current weight, staying the course could prove difficult. Here are ten, easy tips on how to eat at a Fourth of July barbecue, brought to you by Nick Kempen, Advantage Trainer at The Sports Club/LA in Miami:

How to Eat at a 4th of July BBQ

  1. Use only half of a hot dog or hamburger bun; eat it “open face” style.
  2. Eliminate the bun entirely and wrap the hamburger or hot dog in lettuce! Ok to use as many lettuce leaves as you want.
  3. Try (BYOB) low-fat turkey burgers or chicken sausages. Only your host will know for sure.
  4. Drink a low-fat, high protein shake about 30 minutes before arriving so you won’t overindulge.
  5. Ditch the big plate and opt for one of the small, dessert plates. A full, small plate is not only smaller, but seeing it can be satisfying.
  6. Avoid dishes made with simple carbohydrates such as potato salads, breads, chips and pretzels.
  7. Take more fruit with your dessert. If no fruit is available, share your serving with your friend -- or make one by sharing!
  8. Stick to water; add lemon or lime to dress it up. If you choose to drink alcohol, reduce calories and avoid dehydration by alternating with bottled water.
  9. Eat slowly... slowly... slowly. Give your body a chance to recognize being full. Relax and focus on your time with friends and family.
  10. After eating, give yourself about 20-30 minutes before deciding on seconds.

The open face suggestion is really helpful. Many restaurants actually are used to people having their sandwiches this way. Some call it protein style or low-carb. Those buns on the sandwiches are filled with empty calories and restaurants use the cheapest bread they can get. Good tip!

Great article. I also drink a lot of water during holidays. I try to avoid all breads, pastas and starches like potatoes. I love meats, so will have a simple piece of meat instead.

    Very herlpful hints. Thanks Stefan...

Most BBQs have lots of pies and ice cream for dessert. How about an article telling us which of these to stay away from? Or healthy desserts?

I think when people get together they eat more without thinking. Maybe they are distracted? It is interesting that you mention "share your dessert," I guess it all depends on what your goals are.

    Stefan,
I have been trying like hell to lose these last few pounds. I look muscular but still don't have my total six pack visible.

SO, I told my doctor that I have trouble concentrating and he gave me some pills for ADD. Pretty much aamphetamines. And now I have no desire to eat! Lost 7lbs in 10 days!

Does this make me a bad person?
