Few people have the self discipline to make it through the holidays without missing a workout or overindulging at least once. These tips will help any exerciser to stay on track without feeling too guilty about their fitness or weight loss plan.

  1. Have realistic expectations. The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day are generally not the best time to try and lose weight or start a new exercise regime. A plan to maintain your current weight is more realistic for most people.
  2. Allow for some indulgence. Trying to make it to endless holiday parties without ever hitting the egg nog or the cookie tray could result in a backlash binge if your willpower fails. Before each party, decide how you will allow for limited treats so that you feel both satiated and successful.
  3. Include family and friends in fitness activities. Not every family function needs to be about eating. Get together for apple cider and a brisk walk, or commit to a stint at the gym together after an afternoon of shopping.
  4. Set easy short term goals to guarantee success. If you can commit to and keep one healthy goal each day, chances are that you'll get to the New Year feeling ready to take on more significant weight loss or fitness goals. Start slowly, with the intent of getting more serious up in January.
