CNN reports: A possible 'Fat Tax' on soda.
That’s right; CNN reported yesterday that New Yorkers could possibly face a ‘Fat Tax’. A fat tax is one in which taxes are imposed on items such as fattening or sugary food. This particular ‘fat’ tax would be imposed on soda pop. Fat tax initiators are optimistic that monies generated would assist paying for health care programs. That’s not all; creators are also hoping it will cause individuals to rethink their grocery purchases thus lowering obesity rates resulting in lower future health care costs. This tax was brought up for measure earlier this year but rejected; now the soda tax is back up for talks.
It’s no surprise lobbyists of many of the big soda companies are fighting this tooth and nail. CNN also reported that Coca-Cola CEO, Muhter Kent, has commented, “Coke didn’t make Americans fat. Americans need to exercise!”
Earlier this year The Trust for America's Health released its annual obesity report. It stated 33% of Americans overweight and another 33% obese, well over 50% of the US population.
