Nude yoga: Too shy to try?

If you Google nude yoga you will see many sites- a couple of which look legitimate.

It seems that nude yoga is hitting the yoga scene. Naked yoga was associated with hippies in the 1960s and gay men in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Although some say that nude yoga has gone mainstream, looking in Boston all that can be found are nude all male yoga classes. Where the classes are and when they are offered will only be given upon registration.  However, I did find Aaron Starr, who teaches and developed Hot Nude Yoga. He has classes in Boston and L.A.

Articles written say that you can find some co-ed nude yoga studios in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco (not surprisingly, it was very easy to find this co-ed studio in San Francisco) and even Salt Lake City; however, you will be hard-pressed to find women only. We still have a way to go, baby. The men have it this time, so kudos to those not too shy to try.

If you would like to take this slowly, then you can try this pose:

1. Start with mountain pose and roll down into a forward bend.
2. As you roll down, take the time to look at your whole body. (No negative thoughts allowed!)
3. Roll up after a few breaths.

What is Nude Yoga?

Yogis say that the classes aren't sexual (that's possible since nudist camps aren't about sex either), but rather about empowering oneself.

  1. Obviously you won't be wearing clothes but the poses, classes, and instructors will be doing what clothed yoga classes offer.
  2. The purpose is to really see if you are in proper alignment during various yoga poses.
  3. These classes promote a sense of openness among yogis.
  4. The fact that all our bodies look different and none is perfect is truly a benefit to shedding the impossible goals we set.

This was the first yoga class for Kristin Johnson, 34, from San Francisco. "I wanted to approach yoga from a nonphysical, nonsuperficial way, because a lot of it is about cute outfits and competitiveness,'' she said. "Doing it nude, I thought there wouldn't be any of that. It would be internal, about me.  Without clothes, I was able to move even more,'' she said. "Man! Not having anything on is so freeing. I don't know if I could do yoga with clothes on." source
