Is Kung Fu a good exercise for weight loss?

Kung Fu lengthens and strengthens your body! (wudaokungfu.com)

Getting bored of the same old gym routine?  Spice up your weight loss program by trying a new class.   Kung Fu is one of the oldest forms of exercise that teaches you self defense as well as improving your health.  Although it may not be the most popular form of fitness for women, many would be surprised at the weight loss body transformation benefits the martial art has to offer.

Wu Dao Kung Fu and Tai Chi is the premier martial arts school in Cambridge, MA.  A typical class starts out with about 10 minutes of relaxing yoga, that lengthens the body and increases flexibility through stretching.  Then the class continues with a set of kicks that really elevate your heart rate, and starts the sweat to begin pouring out.  The class then follows a series of kicks and jabs that not only tone up the entire lower body but also teaches self disciplines.  Wu Dao incorporates all muscle groups with a special segment dedicated to strengthening the core.

As a fitness professional, I am not afraid to admit, that the Kung Fu class I took, left me hot and sweaty.  The next day, I had sore muscles I never thought existed... and I do fitness for a living!  It may not be the key to weight loss unless you can keep your diet.  It will tone up your body very quickly if this is true.

Kung Fu is not just about martial arts.  Its a practice that teaches mental discipline for focus and concentration as well as improving the students’ self confidence, self-discipline, and sharpens mental awareness.

Challenge yourself to try a new class every week or two weeks to keep your fitness routine fresh and exciting.  Trying new classes, like Kung Fu at Wu Dao will leave you feeling stronger, more confident and curious as to what else is out there.

Want to try it for yourself at home?  Check out this video with Tim Hartmann the head instructor at Wu Dao showing some lower body leg toning and lengthening exercises.
