In gyms and personal training studios, people begin new exercise programs every day. Many of these people will be hampered by wearing really poor footwear. Often, shoes are mistakenly selected based on how they look or because they were the right price. Some people use shoes that are just really old, broken down and no longer able to provide the support and cushion that they were made for.
When clients complain about sore feet or almost any lower body ache or pain that is new, a seasoned trainer's quick response is often – “How are your shoes?” Many small issues as well as just plain sore feet are fixed with a properly fitted new pair of shoes. It is a simple $100 solution to a nagging problem that can lead to injury.
There are some really smart exercise physiologists who suggest lifting weights and running in really flat shoes with minimal support and cushion. That may work for some more advanced exercisers and the relatively few runners who are very light and biomechanically perfect – however for the average person trying to be active and healthy – it is wise to invest in a good pair of running or possibly cross training shoes.
Consult a local merchant who specializes in providing fitting. Good local running stores include Charm City Run, Fleet Feet and Falls Road running. All take the time to examine the biomechanics of each customer and make a good recommendation about which shoe will provide the best combination of support and cushioning for each customer. Their staffs are well trained and they consider what the person needs, not what is in stock or what looks good with a particular outfit!
Enjoy your exercise program, take care of your feet and use good shoes!
