Clear Lake Information: Some good mostly bad & definitely ugly on fishing Clear Lake

With reports of a tough bite and slow fishing coming from fishermen, lake guides and tackle stores the question on every anglers mind seems to be when will Clear Lake break open? The algae bloom is in full effect and finding clear water is a task in itself. Last year saw the worst Lyngbya bloom in 20 years, the die off of the blue green bloom results in the rotting algae and releases the powerful stench associated with the south end.

A few anglers wading their way through the reek and the rot have claimed a catch worthy of Clear Lake, but many have left, let down.

The Lake County, Record–Bee Outdoors writer, Terry Knight reports that "for every fishermen that is catching 5-10 bass there are three or four that are either catching none or very few".

The past two Sunday’s in July the Lake played host to the U.S. Angler’s Choice WRL tournaments.

Results rocketed with two boats weighing 26 plus lbs and 3 more with 20 lbs or better at the July 24 event that had 142 anglers, but that same tourney saw less than half the field weigh a limit and 13 teams come up empty.

Last Sunday, July 31 had 138 anglers competing for the best catch again, with only 20 of the 69 boats weighing in a limit, two bags over 20 lb and a blank for 7 boats.

Some success has been claimed in the Clear Lake Oaks arm area, according to reports in the Mercury News.

Flippin’ found fish in the mid morning hours in mid Lake areas, but died off as the pea soup pushed in with the wind.

A successful consensus of the old “shaking the plastic worm” seems to be what most will admit to be their key to a catch.
