Fishing Q and A is a column within the Little Rock Fishing Examiner column that will showcase different people in the fishing business. The Fishing Examiner recently had the chance to sit down and talk with Justin Winston, the owner of Winston Outdoors in Sheridan. We did a short Q and A session to help our readers learn a little more about Justin and Winston Outdoors Company. Below is the short interview.
FE: Tell us a little about your store. When did you get started? Why?
JW: Winston Outdoors Company opened its doors in May of 2007. I opened Winston Outdoors to offer the fishermen of Sheridan and surrounding areas a place find quality fishing supplies at a good price.
FE: You have a nice store here with lots of high quality tackle. Obviously, you will sell to anyone, but who exactly are you targeting?
JW: My primary demographic is the tournament bass angler. I would guess that 95% of my items are bass lures.
FE: What are your three most popular items?
JW: The three items I sell the most of are 1. Netbait Paca Chunks, 2. Zoom Ol’ Monsters, and 3. Zoom Baby Brush Hogs.
FE: Why do you think you sell more of these?
JW: The Paca Chunks sell because jig fishing is very popular and can be fished year round. The Ol’ Monster sells more during the summer months, but worm fishing is one of the most popular ways to fish. The Baby Brush Hog sells because it is a versatile lure that can be fished almost all year.
FE: Where do most of your customers fish?
JW: I believe my customers are evenly divided between the local lakes and the Arkansas River. If I had to pick, I would give the edge to the Arkansas River.
FE: Do you still fish?
JW: I do still fish, but not as often as I would like at times. I guess the saying is true that once you start a business devoted to your hobby, time spent doing that hobby will drastically decrease.
FE: Do you think your fishing style affects what you sell?
JW: I definitely think my fishing style affects what I sell. I only bass fish and the bulk of my merchandise is dedicated to bass fishing.
FE: Does Winston Outdoors sell online?
JW: I do have a store online. The website is www.winstonoutdoors.com. I don’t have every item listed on the website, so if people don’t see what they are looking for, they can contact me and I can get it for them if I don’t have it.
FE: Do you offer any kind of specials to internet customers?
JW: At this time, I do not offer any internet specials. However, I an currently looking into my options with internet specials. I do offer free shipping on any orders of $100 or more.
