Victim of the Bass Extractor
Most people that fish for bass in Middle America know about the PJ’s Football Jigs. They are unbelievable in their ability to catch bass under various conditions. Did you know they make a variation of the football jig that comes in the form of a finesse type jighead. The Bass Extractor jig is a jighead that is similar to other finesse jigheads in that it can fished with little worms. That is about where the similarities end.
Jigheads can be classified into two categories: fall heads and bottom heads. Fall heads are jigheads that draw most of their strikes on the fall. Bottom heads are heads that get more bites on or near the bottom. The Bass Extractor is definitely a bottom bouncing dynamo. The finesse worm is an awesome limit finder when rigged on this jighead, but the Bass Extractor is more versatile in that creature baits or big worms can be fished on these oversized hooks as well. When bass are buried up in the rocks or points with rock and wood this jig is at its best. The football shaped head allows the bait to be pulled over most rocky areas and if it does hang up, usually just a pop of the line is all it takes to free the lure and continue fishing. A lot of bites come when the bait pops free of the rock.
The Bass Extractor can be rigged effectively on both bait cast and spinning tackle. If throwing into heavy cover then rigging up the 3/16 or ¼ oz models on a 6.3:1 reel and a medium heavy 7’0” rod is almost a must. If the cover is a little more scattered throwing any of the three sizes on spinning tackle works great. A spinning rod in the 6’6” to 7’0” range allows an angler to make long casts and cover water. A popular size would have to be the ¼ oz size because it stays on the bottom and has a 4/0 hook that will handle just about any kind of bait. The Bass Extractor comes in three sizes 1/8, 3/16, and ¼ oz.
