A local firefighter wrote an e-mail letter to Mayor Jones and all council members about two years ago in 2008 about the budget and ways the city could save money on the monthly budget. The Mayor must have not liked what he saw in the e-mail and forwarded the e-mail to the fire chief's office.
The firefighter was called down to the chief's office and was asked if he had sent the e-mail. The firefighter told the fire chief that he had sent the letter to the Mayor and to all council members. The fire chief talked with the firefighter and read the e-mail to the firefighter that the firefighter had written.
The firefighters e-mail was worded something like this: To the Mayor and all city council members I am a firefighter with the city of Mobile and there are many ways to cut the city budget.
Quit buying ladder trucks like truck 4 that is too long and hard to maneuver for the downtown city streets.
Quit buying big SUV's for upper management employees to use for job duties and to take home and use for personal use.
Quit buying such big fire trucks and buy ones that are smaller and more fuel efficient.
The firefighter wrote this e-mail in 2008 because the Mayor convinced the council to vote to increase employees co-pays, premiums and deductibles. The firefighter was reprimanded by the fire chief and was told by the chief that next time if he had a problem with upper management and budget matters to please address the chief's office first before sending any more e-mails to the Mayor's office or any of the council members.
Now two years later the city is having to cut the budget. Click on the links below to see more news on the budget cuts.
