Competitors at the monthly International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) match at Cherokee Gun Club this month had three options. They could shoot the regular match, a Defensive Multi Gun (DMG) match, or the IDPA Classifier match. Only one option could be shot.
The Club held the match on Sunday, March 6, 2011. The match started at 1:15 PM and concluded by 5:00 PM. There were 44 shooters overall with 2 lady shooters including local celebrity Tierani Hendrix. All Divisions of IDPA equipment were represented at the match.
The regular match option consisted of 8 stages shot with handguns. Skills tested in the regular match involved shooting from seated and kneeling positions, shooting on the move, and shooting with one hand. Some targets were concealed behind T-shirts and required the shooter to estimate the hit zone on the target.
Participants in the Defensive Multi Gun option shot 4 stages with handguns and 4 stages with long guns. Three of the long gun stages used pistol caliber carbines and 1 used a shotgun. The shotgun stage and 2 of the carbine stages involved transitioning from the shooter’s handgun to the long gun at some point during the stage. Carbines used included pump action, lever action, autoloaders with iron sights, and autoloaders with red dot optical sights. Shotguns included pumps, autoloaders, and a double barrel over/under.
All shooters had to shoot at a long distance of 40 yards at a falling steel target called a Pepper Popper. A Pepper Popper is 42 inches tall with a 12 inch circle as the main scoring area. The Popper is hinged at the base and must fall backwards to count for score. The Popper stage was extremely challenging for some competitors.
Fourteen shooters elected to shoot the Classifier option. IDPA shooters less than Master Class are required to shoot the Classifier annually. The Classifier is a fixed 90 rounds course of fire shot in 3 stages. The shooter’s score determines their Classification of Novice, Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert, or Master.
Cherokee Gun Club holds matches each month on the 1st Sunday of the month. Signup begins at 12 Noon with shooting beginning at 1:15PM. The public is invited to watch or participate. Next month’s match will have the Classifier option available again.
The Club will also host a sanctioned Championship on May 21st called the 2011 Cherokee IDPA Wheelgun Championship. This match is open to all equipment Divisions but is specifically oriented toward revolvers. Other Divisions shooting the Championship will be limited to using 6 rounds only in all magazines. More information is available on the Championship’s website. There will also be a Defensive Multi Gun Sidematch available on the 21st but only one or the other can be shot, not both.
