Cherokee Gun Club hosted the 2011 IDPA Wheelgun Championship on May 21, 2011. This was a sanctioned IDPA event, one of only two held in Georgia in 2011. The Championship began at 9AM and was finished by 5PM.
This match was designed to encourage the use of revolvers and low capacity autoloading pistols. “Wheelgun” is a nickname for revolver, hence the Championship’s name. All pistols and revolvers were required to start loaded with no more than 6 rounds and could reload with no more than 6 rounds at a time.
There were 33 competitors who shot the match over the course of 2 days. Safety Officers shot the match the day before, on Friday, and the regular contestants shot on Saturday. No shooters were disqualified. One competitor shot the match with a five shot S&W J frame revolver. Most of the rest shot 6 shot revolvers, either Stock Service Revolver or Enhanced Service Revolver. A few autoloaders attended also.

The match consisted of 18 stages requiring a minimum of 177 rounds to complete, plus 3 rounds for the chronograph. All ammunition was chronographed. Safety Officers handled three bays in succession, as the match progressed. The Match officiating was consistent and professional.
Most stages required shooting around non-threat targets. Several stages included Pepper Popper targets, which are steel targets that must be solidly hit to fall and must fall to be scored. Many of the stages required the contestants to shoot on the move. The rest of the stages required the competitors to shoot behind cover, either a barricade or kneeling behind a barrel. One stage, which simulated a store robbery, required the shooter to retrieve spare ammunition from a box underneath a counter.
Weather for the match was hot but clear with plenty of sunshine. Fortunately, all the bays feature some overhead cover and numerous places were available on the range to rest out of the sun. Restroom facilities were more than adequate.
Cherokee Gun Club holds matches each month on the 1st Sunday of the month. The next monthly match will be June 5th. Registration will begin at 1145 and close at 1245, with shooting beginning at 1pm. The public is invited to watch or participate.
