The Shape of Things to Come, on exhibit at Sandy Spring Museum from Jan 5 through March 27, 2011, began several years ago with painter Cynthia Farrell Johnson and fiber artist Sharon Keyser Jackson musing about doing a joint project. The idea that evolved drew in four more artists, Betty L. Farrell (knitted works), Lezetta J. Moyer (fabric and beadwork), Desiree J. Sterbini (pastels), and Sherry Burton Ways (mixed media art dolls).
The six individuals work as a creative team, with Johnson initiating a theme and/or design and the other artists exploring its implications and expressions each in a different medium. Four thematic threads anchor this show: Out of Kilter, Balm in Gilead, In Full Bloom, and Hearts and Minds.
These titles hold a different meaning for each participant. The goal of the collaboration is not to reproduce the initial design but rather to express the meaning each idea and design generates for each artist. The titles, colors, and moods inspire each work in a unique way. As a whole, the show celebrates the many ways artists express themselves and speak to deep human concerns. If we are to create something new, creative collaborations are the best way forward. This is the shape of things to come.
The Sandy Spring Museum art committee mounts quarterly shows in the Museum’s handsome Dr. Bird Room and Farquhar Gallery. Meeting the first Monday of every month at the Museum, the committee welcomes interest from area artists in showing their work and/or participating in the committee’s efforts.
The show can be viewed during Museum hours -- M, W, Th 9-4 and Sat/Sun 12-4. Admission to the Museum is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Individual pieces from The Shape of Things to Come are available for purchase, and several artists are also offering smaller pieces on consignment in the Museum Shop. The Sandy Spring Museum (www.sandyspringmuseum.org), is located on MD Rt. 108 in Sandy Spring, Maryland
