ADS vs AIDS at Long View Gallery
Beginning Tuesday, December 1 with an Opening Reception from 6-8 p.m., Long View Gallery will showcase 25 years of HIV/AIDS public service ads created by veteran adman Jeff McElhaney and freelance creative teams who tackled the controversial subject matter despite its taboo status among advertising industry players.
The show, which runs through the end of December, chronicles a period marked by the struggles of scientists to combat this microscopic enemy and the gargantuan challenge that gay community leaders faced in their efforts to change the behaviors that perpetuated its spread.
Created from the dawning of the AIDS crisis in the mid-80s, many of the ads were developed for forward-thinking organizations that included the Maryland Department of Health – AIDS Administration, Whitman-Walker Clinic and the Health Education Resource Organization (HERO) under trying circumstances and amid significant concern about both the messaging and whom would be credited with delivering it.
