Stanley Jordan Jazz Alley review

by Loma Gregg

He’s been called ‘part musician, part magician’, and both are accurate. Listening to guitarist Stanley Jordan is equaled only to watching he and his trio.  A degree in music theory and composition from Princeton University, since his debut in 1985, Stanley Jordan’s trademark right-hand tapping technique is used as he double fists – playing two custom guitars at once, treating one almost like a piano.  What is amazing beyond his skills is realizing how his magic touch crosses his technique over the seas of classical, jazz and rock .  And while DVDs are certainly enjoyable, first seeing how Stanley Jordan pulls this off live is truly the best way to enjoy his music.

As always, my favorite seat in the house of Jazz Alley continues to be the tables at the edge of the balcony where we seem to be almost one with the musicians as we overlook the stage.  I arrive early (and recommend doing so) in order to be able to finish my meal and turn my attention to Stanley and his trio, but its certainly not necessary. . The service is very attentive and for this meal I opted for a lighter fare of Antipasto – an assortment of locally cured meats, cheeses and an array of daily chef creations that is also noted on the menu as being Gluten Free and priced at $13.50.  The free parking right across the entrance in the alley is extremely convenient. It is also recommended to bring a bit of cash for the nice gentleman who keeps the garage traffic flowing before and after performances.
