Cordero have just finished their set on the Northwest Court stage and they illuminated a greying evening and entranced a very mixed audience entirely.
With a Puerto Rican lead singer, Ani Cordero, and three male backers, they fused Latin rhythms with an indie pop beat, and came up with something quite special. Her voice is enchanting and sensual, and in songs like "Why Won't You Hold Me Down", - yes, it's about shagging, and La Matadora, they managed to get a few up salsa dancing.
Ani's introduction to La Matadora was hilarious. It's about a female bullfighter who was apparently prevented from torturing the poor dumb animal because the male bullfighters protected it as a male preserve. But we were told to ignore any animal rights implications, and concentrate on the awful sexism of it all. The PC Seattle audience decided rightly to ignore it all and enjoy the music :-)
Although we had planned just to catch the start of this and move on to Iglu and Hartly on the Rockstar Stage, so good were Cordero that we stayed so see it all. Pictures to follow.
