South Phoenix PhotoVoice Project, Photography Exhibition opening was held on July 30th 2009 at Salvation Army South Mountain Community Center. The PhotoVoice project is a part of Arizona’s effort to decrease obesity. The children aged 10-12 met every Saturday to upload their photographs they took and to recognize and talk about them in relation to health, exercise, nutrition and body image. Not only did they learn about these concepts but also they learned photography basics from ASU graduate of the photography program and local artists, Andrew Hammerand. He helped them in their creative process. After 12 weeks of meeting together to talk about the photographs and the idea of PhotoVoice, Hammerand and local artist, Claire Warden worked together to curate South Phoenix Through the Eyes of Youth.
The kids were highly interested in what they were communicating to their community through their photographs. It is no longer up at the community center but will travel wherever it needs to go to be seen.
