The Hip-Hop Theater Festival will produce a workshop production of "Deez Nuts" on October 1st at the Ohio Theater in Soho.
The production will star The Beatnuts, a legendary underground hip-hop duo from Queens. The Latino group, which currently consists of members Junkyard Ju-Ju (Jerry Tineo) and Psycho Les ( Lester Fernandez) will use music, dance and sound to "tell the story about Queens," says Clyde Valentin, the Executive Director of the Hip-Hop Theater Festival (HHTF).
The performance, written by music writer Sacha Jenkins, is centered around a Queens Journalist, who returns to Corona, Queens to meet The Beatnuts. In the process, the audience will learn about the cultural upbringing of the duo while revealing the inspirations that went into their music.
According to Valentin, Deez Nuts will chronologically showcase music from the group's albums with songs "Rain of Tec," "Watch out now" and "Se Acabo."
"Our goal," he says. "is to do creative storytelling and to capture moments and emotions the only way theater can."
The show has a limited run from October 1-October 3rd. Tickets can be purchased for $25 the day of or in advance at the Hip-Hop Theater Festival. General admission tickets can also be purchased at the Ohio Theater starting October 1st.
The HHTF concludes at the Soho venue with theatrical productions: "Young, gifted, and hyped," "Zomo the Rabbit: A hip-hop creation myth," "The word begins" and "Angela's mixtape" on October 17th.
