Cynthia Rogers, "Self-Portrait (Good Girl)"
A small but well curated show opened last weekend at the Helms Building along the Washington Corridor in Culver City. Titled "Zeroheroz!", the exhibition brings together a selection of works by eight contemporary female artists: Linda Cohen, Sandra Klein, Pamela Leeds, Zully Perez, Mary Ann Ripper, Cynthia Rogers, Alison Wright, and Deborah Yates, and was curated by Amy Lapides.
At the entrance to the elongated space rests a giant bowling ball partnered at the far end of the room by a huge red pin hanging from the ceiling. This moment of levity does not necessarily match the tone of the rest of the pieces on view but doesn't contradict it either. In retrospect, it acts like an exclamation point to the artists' statements.
Though issues of womanhood are at stake, most of the work takes as its subject the universal question of 'how do I resolve myself in a world of constant push and pull?'. The artists' responses are displayed across a variety of media, and all the answers are intriguing, quirky, and provocative. In particular, artist Cynthia Rogers' sculptures, made out of everyday, often domestic objects, evoke the internal conflicts that arise when expectations butt up against personal expression.
Zeroheroz! is a tiny gem of an exhibition. Eight female artists together could have produced intense feminist perspectives, and though the work is uniquely feminine, the show resonates essentially, and most importantly, on a human level.
The exhibition closes on April 18th, and the closing promises a party and fashion show that is open to the public from 5 to 8 pm. For more information, please visit http://www.8women-zeroheroz.com/Home.html.
