Kim Light Gallery in Culver City is currently showing Kim McCarty in her first solo exhibition. The exhibition runs through May 16th and is worth a quick stop if you're in the neighborhood.
The gallery's main room holds reveals a selection of several large-scale watercolor portraits and a cohesive group of smaller framed portraits, hung on the back wall like family photos . McCarty manipulates watercolor's ability to bleed color into expressionist figures whose individual facial features are like brief afterthoughts. Yet nonetheless each portrait resonates with a vibrant character. Leaving only the figure's outline and barest of physical signifiers, McCarty produces an organic display of colors along the surface of each portrait, like she is describing each personality through the flow of their energy chakras.
