Nevada Ballet Theatre returns in fall with 'Timeless Innovation'

Though it doesn't seem possible as we Las Vegans muddle through the blistering days of summer, believe it or not, fall is only two months away. Along with cooler days, longer nights and the ability to leave the house before sundown comes a brand-new season of fancy footwork and choreographed artistry from your friends at Nevada Ballet Theatre.

Monday, Southern Nevada's premiere dance company announced its 2009-2010 season opener, "Timeless Innovation," debuting Oct. 17 and 18 at UNLV's Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall (4505 S. Maryland Parkway). The program features George Balanchine's jazzy and upbeat "Rubies," from his full-length ballet "Jewels," as well as two Las Vegas premieres by NBT Artistic Director James Canfield, "Coco" and "Jungle."

The two Canfield-choreographed pieces are indicative of NBT's dedication to innovation and diversity. "Coco" is an homage to the life of fashion empress Coco Chanel, set to the music of Edith Piaf. "Jungle," meanwhile, flies the other direction, its visually lush execution accompanied by the sound of pioneering electronica group Future Sounds of London.

In addition to the dance program, a free, pre-performance perspective called "Insights" will be held in the lobby 45 minutes prior to curtain, and "Talk Back," an interactive question-and-answer session, will follow the performances.

"Timeless Innovation" will have two performances, one at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 and one at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18.
