Mani Rao's "100 Poems"
Though the poetry scene in Las Vegas has seen better days, a small but dedicated contingent is working to keep it alive. The "Word Up!" weekly poetry reading series, formerly held at reJAVAnate on East Flamingo, has taken up residence Tuesday nights at the University District Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (4550 S. Maryland Parkway).
The March 17 edition features Las Vegas-based poet Mani Rao. The author of seven books of poetry, Rao has published essays and poems in numerous journals and anthologies from publishers such as W.W. Norton, BloodAxe and Penguin. In addition to performing at literary festivals internationally and making regular rounds on the poetry and conference circuit, the India-born Rao was a visiting fellow at the 2005 Iowa International Writing Program and won its 2006 writer-in-residence fellowship.
"Word Up!" runs from 7 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. Admission is free and open to all ages.
