Mark Francis at Steven Vail Fine Arts

On February 14th of this year, Steven Vail Fine Arts opened its new gallery space in the East Village with an exhibition of prints by the British artist Mark Francis.
Francis executed a suite of seven lithographs with World House Editions and Editions Copenhagen in the fall of 2007. Some of the images represent cells being observed under high-powered microscopes; others are visual depictions of the songs of crickets.
Since the early 1990s, Mark Francis has exhibited in both Europe and the United States, drawing on biological subject matter to create large, involving canvases.  The exhibition offers Des Moines area collectors the unique opportunity to obtain work by a prominent contemporary artist, whose works on paper have not been exhibited in this city.
" The goal of both the exhibition and the gallery is to offer museum-quality work to the collector base being built in this city," says owner Steven Vail, a long-time veteran of the art world.
Along with the suite of lithographs, there are works on paper by Jon Armleder and a bronze sculpture by pop artist Kenny Scharf.
The exhibition is free and open to the public most Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 am to 5 pm, through the end of May. The gallery is located in the Teachout building in the East Village, at 500 East Locust, suite 202, on the second floor.
