The Emmanuel Gallery opened in 1973 as an art space on the Auraria Campus and it is a truly beautiful building and space. The gallery has shown local and international artists in what was a church built in 1876.
The current show is entitled Phil Risbeck: Poster Art which is open until August 27, 2009. This extensive exhibit, forty posters in all, spans forty years of Risbeck’s work. His poster work embraces the best of the graphic tradition and is international in scope, the list of cities he has worked in remarkable.
Risbeck is a professor of Graphic Design at Colorado State University and his work is technically remarkable and his images are artistically moving. CSU has a long, respected history in graphic arts and poster exhibitions and collecting.
One poster that is particularly moving was created for the play, The Laramie Project. The blood stained hands reach for the sky in tortured agony depicting the final moments of Matthew Shepard’s all too brief life. The palette is somber and consists only of shades of blue.
The gallery is free, (donations welcome) and open to the public. It is truly a gem of a gallery and gives so much to our community. The two sculptures that greet visitors outside of the building were created by Charles Parson, Senior Chair for the Art Department at the Community College of Denver.
