DALLAS, June 24, 2009 – Reflecting the cultural and ideological inspiration of the Dallas art scene, the 6th Annual Hecho en Dallas juried art exhibit features professional local artists July 2nd through August 22, 2009 at the LatinoCulturalCenter.

Each of the 14 selected artists uses different media, ranging from sculptures to photography, to present political, social and personal concerns. For example, Plano photographer Lupita Murillo Tinnen focuses her work on immigrant women.

“These are strong Mexican immigrant women who are creating a new life in the United States and who are bringing traditions and customs with them in order to feel more at home,” Murillo Tinnen states. “While they each came to the United States at different times, they are all trying to adjust to the new culture.”

On the other hand, Cuyler Etheredge zones-in on issues outside of the United States in “Zimbabwe Voter,” a series of monotype pieces depicting men who wish to be seen but not identified.

“Their red-stained fingers offer proof that the have cooperated at the polls, as demanded,” Etheredge says. “But the monotypes catch them at a moment of defiance. The wary eyes peer out at us as if to say, ‘See us; see what is happening to us. Do something.’”

The exhibition was conceived by the LatinoCulturalCenter in recognition of the talented pool of artists whose creative endeavors give vitality to the cultural movement in Dallas.

This year’s jury was composed of Hugo Garcia-Urrutia, owner of   Decorazon Gallery; Elizabeth Hunt Blanc, deputy director of Southern Methodist University’s MeadowsMuseum; and Maria Garcia-Pedroche, head of family experiences and community outreach for the Dallas Museum of Art.

Garcia-Urrutia said exhibits like these are very important because they validate an artist’s work and helps him or her grow in showcasing their work to the public.

“This exhibit invites the community to experience local art and brings people together to support what Dallas artists have to offer,” Garcia-Urrutia said.

The selected 6th Annual Hecho en Dallas artists are Lane Banks, Eunice Bridges, Aly Carrill, Don Carlos Espinosa, Cuyler Etheredge, Morgan Ford, Violeta Gutierrez, Brent Kollock, Bryce Lafferty, Frank Lopez, Chancellor Rodriguez Page, Kathy Robinson, Lesly Rucker and Lupita Murrilo Tinnen.

An opening reception with the artists will be held on Thursday, July 2nd from 6 to 9 p.m. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.
