Mallorie Freeman: Spicy Dames and Tales of Mystery
Mallorie Freeman: preparator for the Progressive Art Collection by day, painter of mystery and intrigue by night. Her work are like the covers of old detective novels from the 40's. There is even text painted in the same fonts of that era.
Her latest exhibition, Spicy Dames and Tales of Mystery, sums it all up. Sexy, bad ass babes? Check. A dark sense of noir-ish secrecy? Check. Trouble is afoot and it's going to take some detective work to solve the case.
The women she paints are seductive. Any man would love to take them home, but if you cross them, watch out!
Half of the show exhibits Mallorie's large oil paintings. They are smooth and cool. No brush strokes can be found on the surface. She paints in the tradional manner, building it up layer after layer requiring a great amount of control.
The other half of the show features her smaller mixed media works. They contain the same subject matter, yet executed differently. They have a looser feel, possibly leaving more room for experimentation. They appear to be part print and part graphite drawing.
The work is very focused. She knows her subject matter and executes well. Often, art can leave the viewer thinking the ideas could have been explored further. But not in this case. Bam! Here you go. Mallorie's work is highly polished and is definitely worth checking out.
The show lasts till September 13th. William Rupnik Gallery is open by appointment only.
