Drawn and quartered: a drawing battle royale at Asterisk Gallery

Drawn and Quartered - competitive drawing event at Asterisk, June 6th

Competitive drawing.
Models and waitresses.
Prizes for the best drawings.

That's all you need to know.

Four of Cleveland's established drawing groups went head to head on June 6th at Asterisk Gallery. Dr. Sketchy vs The Murray Hill Group vs Tremont’s Pretentious Artists vs The Northern Ohio Illustrators Society. Bring it on!

As you enter Asterisk, a wave of heat and humidity let you know that the adrenaline is flowing and excitement is high. Drawn and Quartered, the latest event to feature Cleveland's Dr. Sketchy drawing group, is a high octane, fast paced drawing competition. Four of the areas most talented drawing groups were competing not only for prizes, but for recognition and bragging rights.

Models would pose for any number of drawing themes and durations of time. A rowdy audience was on hand to vote for their favorites. After each event, the artists would hold up their creations. Based on applause, cheers and screams, a winner was chosen. At the end of the night, the team with the most victories is crowned drawing champion!

Drawn and Quartered brought a large crowd to Asterisk Saturday night.

One room centered on faster sketches with surprisingly accomplished results. There were fast sprint sketches, an opposite hand sketch, a drawing of the audience and many others. Perhaps the best drawings came from the partner sketch. One artist starts the drawing, then halfway through the allotted time their partner finishes.

Meanwhile, in the adjacent room, was the most anticipated drawing event of the evening: the hour and a half sketch. The model posed in the same position for the entire duration with short breaks each half hour. Finally, as time ticked to zero, a crowd gathered to view the finished works. Even more interesting, the model must pick the winner!

Karl Fanter, an art enthusiast, was on hand to soak in the atmosphere. "It's nice to see the process of art being made," said Karl, who is used to the typical gallery experience. This was a chance to see the artists' processes. Starting from nothing, the audience could watch drawings begin with a few lines all the way to a finished piece of art.

The evening was full of competition, but all in the name of good fun. Dare I say it? There were no winners or losers, just a great chance to gather Northeast Ohio's art community and drink beer.
