The 1941 classic, starring Lon Chaney, Jr., “the man of many faces” as he’s fondly referred, gave us a tormented soul of a man, trying to stifle his inner urges, and find a cure for the ‘curse’ that has befallen him and his descendants.
In this re-telling of the classic tale, Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother. He discovers a horrifying destiny for himself and the childhood that ended the night his mother died. He’s spent decades recovering and trying to forget. His life is interrupted when his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing husband to be. Talbot returns home to join the search, and learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, as a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) feels no one is above suspicion.
This re-telling, and as you may note, I didn’t use the word ‘remake’, captures the mood, era, and the essence of the myth and folklore of the full moon. The thought of a ‘werewolf’, a person who changes for periods of time into a wolf, typically when there is a full moon, is a story that has been with us for more than a century. And our off handed comments of strange behavior, and the often used one of “It’s a full moon” to explain other than normal events, still stirs us with an easy feeling…
