This ‘Loser’ is definitely a winner! If you’re into the ‘A-Team’ TV series of the 1980’s, the big screen version is on the way in June 2010! And if this genre of movies is among your favorites, as is mine, ‘The Losers” will ‘wet your dry appetite’.

‘Back in the day when I was growing up, my parents had no problem with me reading the lighter superhero comic books. It was the darker ones I had to hide from them. “Batman” was one they felt was just too dark for my young mind! To this day, Batman is my favorite comic. I was exceptionaly impressed with the re-energized big screen versions of Batman, directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman. They captured the true mood and darkness of the comic books that the previous Batman films lacked.

For the next generations came the ‘graphic novels’ with its’ ‘pseudo violence’ graphic artwork in support of the printed word. The graphic novels have made their way to the big screen and along the way, have established their own cinematic style! “The Losers” is presented in this new cinematic style, with a simple basic premise and characters from a milieu of backgrounds, motivations, and individual character nuances. The tagline for “The Losers” sets the tone: “Anyone Else Would Be Dead By Now”. After being betrayed and left for dead, the members of a CIA special operations team go after the ‘powers-that-be’ who targeted them for assassination!

The cast of “The Losers” comes across with sincerity to their characters with Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four” fame) being barely recognizable with his portrayal which reminded me of the character known as “Face” in “The A-Team” TV series.

A special mention goes to Zoë Saldana who gained international attention for her role of ‘Uhura’ in 2009’s “Star Trek” movie and 2010’s action thriller “Taken” a favorite of this reviewer starring Liam Neeson, and demonstrated her action status in the mega-hit ‘Avatar’. In “The Losers” she adds ‘sexy-deadly’ to her on-screen persona as the operative with the plan to bring down the mysterious ‘Max’, who’s responsible for the special ops teams’ deadly woes!

Here are a few of my favorite ‘graphic novels to the big screen versions’ I’ve enjoyed in recent years. The year of 2005 is the breakout year for graphic novels to the big screen. Frank Miller's classic "Sin City," (2005) which marked the return of actor Mickey Rourke; the English production of “V for Vendetta” (2005) and one of my favorites; “300” (2007) starring Gerard Butler and made him a household name; “Constantine” (2005) starring the “Matrix” trilogy’s Keanu Reeves; “A History of Violence” (2005) with multiple Oscar® nominations starring Viggo Mortensen (“Lord of the Rings” trilogy), “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (the 2003 version) starring Sean Connery; and “Watchmen” (2009) which I’ve viewed more times than I care to admit, and is not only considered to be one of the best graphic novels ever written, but was proclaimed by Time Magazine as one of the "100 Best English Novels of All Time" in 2005!

“The Losers”, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoë Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Óscar Jaenada, Jason Patric, Holt McCallany, Peter Macdissi, Peter Francis James, and Tanee McCall.

Directed by Sylvain White. Written by Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt. Warner Bros. Pictures release. Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence, a scene of sensuality and language. Runtime: 98 minutes.
